I'm 19 years old. My hobbies include watching dramas, anime, and reading novels. Recently, I’ve been watching an anime called "Oblivion Battery." Have you watched it? I'm good at Japanese and Korean, but despite studying English for the longest time, I'm still not very good at it (haha). I quite like sports, but I don’t have much stamina.

Have you ever been to Taiwan? Taiwan doesn’t have a long history and isn’t very big. It is a diverse and international country. English education starts in primary school, so it is like our second language. Due to high levels of international exchange, you can see foreigners everywhere. Many signs, MRT screens, and public transport announcements have English translations. In recent years, some city centres have also added Japanese and Korean.

Today, we will discuss the differences in English usage among Asian countries where English is widely spoken.

I hope that through our discussion, we can learn more about each other's culture and language. I haven’t been to the Philippines yet, but one day, I’ll definitely go!

My name is Nina, and I'm a freshman in university, majoring in Spanish. I love learning about different cultures.

When it comes to English in our culture, I have three main observations.

First, I think our English accent is strongly influenced by the Taiwanese accent. For example, the word student—some people, especially beginners in Taiwan, tend to pronounce it as studen-t, adding an extra "t" sound at the end.

Second, I’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon: we often shorten words in unique ways. For example, instead of saying Facebook or Instagram, we commonly say "FB" and "IG." I only realized how unique this habit is to Taiwan when I spoke with foreigners.

Third, we sometimes insert English words into our daily Chinese conversations, perhaps because we find this way of expressing ourselves simpler and more intuitive.

English plays an important role in Taiwan .We learn English from a young age because many international brands and businesses use English,and it helps people connect with global world .Our government also introducing bilingual policies to improve citizens’ English proficiency.English can be seen everywhere,many young people enjoy watching English series and movies, listening to Western music and using social media in English .Besides,many companies also work with foreign partners.

In my opinion, I believe learning English is important because it allows to communicate with people from different countries and access more information.

As for the role of English in Taiwan, I think it's quite significant for two main reasons.

First, more and more foreigners are coming to Taiwan for travel or work. During their stay, we need to provide them with certain conveniences, such as transportation and medical services. When they encounter problems, effective communication is crucial, and English serves as the main medium.

Second, since Taiwan is an island country, our economy relies heavily on imports and exports. When conducting international business, English becomes an essential skill for communication.

I think I have an interesting personality and also I am an easy-going person. I also love outdoor activities. In April this year, I signed up for a 10k marathon. It was the first time I registered and participated on my own.

Additionally, I really enjoy spending time with humorous and fun people. Feeling the positive energy from others is very important to me. I believe I am an optimistic person who likes to try new challenges.

Travel: English helps you communicate when you visit other countries. Many places use English, so it's easier to get around.

Work: Many jobs need English. You can find better opportunities if you speak it.

In my culture, I think English has been seen as an important tool for leading a life. We use it to not only communicate, I think it also has become a sign of someone’s capability level. The bad or good of English is a big part that affects our future. Such as what school we can study or what job we can do.

I think that using English as a standard is OK. But the content of some exams is too tricky. It is far from daily English and makes lots of people get good grades but can not utilize it. 

In recent years, I notice that this situation has been improved gradually because of the new education curriculum guidelines. I hope the exam can make people enhance their English skill instead of just testing them.

When it comes to accents and having this standard American accent or British accent it's also somewhat of a status symbol here in the Philippines because it indicates that you come from affluence. So English has its practical uses: English is a medium of communication for many, and it's also our field of study here in AB English, but it's also a way to climb the social ladder, so to speak.

It has many unhealthy misconceptions attached to it like, if you know English then automatically you're rich, if you don't know English then you're poor and you're dumb. So there are a lot of things that you have to unlearn when it comes to English and that's what I kind of was very fascinated by when I got into AB English in the first place because we immediately were debunking a lot of myths about there's only one variety of English and all that, so it's a very fun study. I'm very excited to meet all of you, thank you so much!

English has a huge role in the Philippines. It is spoken everywhere since it is one our languages. It is also the primary medium of instruction in our education, therefore, we have been exposed to it and used it for a very long time. I think that the main role of English here in the Philippines is as a means of communication. We use it to interact and socialize with people from different backgrounds. The English here in the Philippines is consider as our second language so English is learned by mostly all of us at a very young age so, It is spoken everywhere no matter the city in the Philippines you are it more often than not you can find someone who can speak conversational english! In the Philippines, the English language is one of the most influential languages given its extensive use or applications in various contexts. More importantly, it helps shape our standing in the international scope—the way we interact with other countries—or in phenomena such as globalization. Although the language had been making stride in the country since time immemorial, the accessibility and competence to the language still vary depending on how it is frequently used—whether it be taught in the house, school settings or any other naturally occuring interactions.

As for my thoughts on the roles of English in the Philippines, I can say that I am very accustomed to its presence in my immediate environment. From learning it in a very young age to encountering it in public establishments. So it really is a big part of my life. It plays a crucial role in the Philippines since it is one of the official languages alongside Filipino. Its influence can be seen in every aspect of Philippines’ society. For instance, in education, English is the primary medium of instructions in schools and universities.  Other aspects that utilizes English are business economy, media and culture, and medical field. Hello everyone I’m Zoe.I am a first-year Spanish major at Fu Jen Catholic University. I started learning guitar when I entered college and I am very passionate about singing. I also enjoy sports, especially volleyball, although I’m not very good at it, I still enjoy the fun and excitement. I also like cycling. I enjoy studying fashion and keeping up with trends. I learned Japanese when I was younger, and after getting into Korean dramas and K-pop, I began learning Korean as well. I really enjoy Japanese and Korean culture, including anime. English is an essential skill for everyone, no matter their age, and it’s becoming more important because of the increasing number of tourists in Taiwan. I believe English has become the default common language, so I hope to learn more about it while also getting to know new cultures and making good friends.
