(Hopkins) Poetry is a great way to help young students read better and helps form a love of words, because poetry is typically short and easy to read/comprehend without any difficulty. (Hopkins) In older students, poetry is seldom taught, and when it is, the students don't tend to like it because it forces them to feel "compassion" or "tolerance". Buy it for yourself and buy it for your friends and family as gifts. (Griffith)
Second, fill the world with poems. The people who are actually looking for poetry may have a hard time finding it because it is tucked into such small nooks and crannies. (Griffith) So, post poems on your social media, make copies of public poems and pass them out at work or to your friends/family, or start a blog with poems you have written or that you enjoy.
Third, infuse your special events with poetry. Start a tradition at your family holidays to share a poem that means something to you before eating. Encourage people to read poems at recitals and weddings. (Griffith)
Fourth, share poems with children. People who hate poetry, usually developed that hatred in school when they had to learn about poetry. So, the best thing we can do for poetry is to share it with children while they are still young and show them the joys of poetry. (Griffith)
Fifth and final, expand the definition. When the poetry slam was created in 1986, the idea was to change the tradition of poetry readings by giving the audience a voice and a power equal to that of the poet. (Griffith) The popularity of poetry slams have given the art form a great deal of advertisement in the form of documentaries and people creating their own poetry slams all over the world.
