Reflection of the IAT Tests

When taking these tests, I was really surprised at the results. When taking the Skin Tone IAT, my results were odd: I prefer white people over black. I was shocked because most of my friends (if not all) are black or of brown descent. I have one or two friends that happen to be white, and so for that test, I think it might be a bit off.

Honestly, I have no preference as I love everyone the same and try my best to live a life not judging others by their skin tone or stereotypes. However, to improve in this area, I think being more open to everyone and broadening my friendship group will help me overcome my bias of having mostly colored friends.

For the second test, the Sexuality IAT, i scored that I prefer straight over gay people. In this context, I think the test could be accurate. I wasn't at all surprised at the results. I support the LBTQA+ community but don't immerse myself in the lifestyle. Some of that is due to personal and religious beliefs. I firmly believe that people should have fundamental rights and be able to decide who they love. Just because I am heterosexual and somewhat religious does not mean I have the power to tell other people how they should love and behave.

According to American Academy of Family Physicians (2019), there are eight ways to reduce implicit bias—introspection, exploring, and identifying your prejudices. Mindfulness, reduce stress, so you don't give in to tendencies. Perspective, consider the point of view from other people's perspectives. Learn to slow down. Individuation - we should evaluate people on their characteristics and not their affiliated group. Check your messaging, use vocabulary that addresses multicultural awareness and we should institutionalize fairness. Meaning we should support a culture of diversity.

The results of this test did not surprise me. I have a best friend who identifies as bisexual and another friend who identifies as pan sexual. However, most of my friends and family identify as heterosexual. I don't think a single person in my family is considered homosexual or identifies as anything other than heterosexual. So, I think this could have been what influenced these results. I did not know I had a slight bias in this area, so this test was good for me to take.

References:

Eight tactics to identify and reduce your implicit biases. AAFP.

This lesson plan is intended for 9th graders to identify who they are and where they want to go. This is an excellent foundational assignment for freshmen to start understanding themselves, where they come from, where they want to go, and how that will impact their high school journey.
