I’m looking out my kitchen window at trees. For twenty years, we lived in Brooklyn Park and looked at neighbors on all sides of us. About two years ago, we had the opportunity to move further north in Brooklyn Park along the Rush Creek Trail. This move meant that we only see trees behind us! I have loved trees all my life. From childhood memories of swinging from a grand tree on a tire swing, to exploring the trees of our grove on the farm. Trees have always brought me peace and connection to the earth. And the best part about living among trees is the birds that visit our feeders.

I am looking out the window at our family's cabin. I am looking at the sunset across the lake and how quiet and calm it is here. The cabin has been in the family for nearly 50 years and I can't imagine a life without it! As a child, I spent nearly every weekend there. I looked forward to being on the boat, fishing, kayaking, campfires, and going into Crosslake for dinner or ice cream. All of the memories I have there are so happy and it is a place that brings a sense of peace to me. As an adult, I look forward to being there and just spending time with my loved ones and being in sunshine!

The view of our backyard is my favorite view. When searching for a home 6 years ago, my husband and I found a balance between privacy, natural elements, a large yard, and a neighborhood. Our large backyard is a amazing platform for our family dog, Jasper, to run and play (chasing the lacrosse ball is his favorite), for family bonfires, for long swinging sessions, to practice kicking a soccer ball, and yard games. We are fortunate to see so many different animals between the pond and the creek (within the tree line on the far left of this picture), including otters, snapping turtles, squirrels, swans, eagles, herons, many species of ducks - our neighbor even catches fish often! I call this the "Big Sky" view, as I love watching storms roll in from the southwest (just to the right), the incredible winter sunsets, and the huge amount of visible stars each clear night. As an added bonus, in the fall, the wetland in the far back lights up yellow with a specific plant species and is just beautiful. This view takes over our home, as it can be seen throughout the entire back of our house, including our three-season porch, where we spend so much time playing, reading, laughing, and eating.

I am looking out the window of our tent. We have not used our tent much, but the short trips we have taken have been amazing (except the time we went backpack camping, don't recommend that). There have been many views but my favorite so far is the one of Tettegouche State Park. A few years back Cass and I went on a waterfall tour along the north shore of MN and saw 7 of the coolest waterfalls and hikes MN had to offer. It is also when we got engaged so it is extra special. The north shore is by far one my favorite places to be.

It sounds like you have made some great memories with your family and wow you have a lot of siblings! I too grew up camping and there is something so special about those memories and just honestly being outside and having a bonfire and "camp food". I hope you get many more adventures in your camper!

That move to have trees in your backyard instead of a neighbor, must have been incredible! Full trees that block you from neighbors are something so special. They are beautiful any season and are so full of life. Cass and I have trees in our yard that I am very eager to have grow large and full. Right now we can see our neighbors because we live in a development, but even having big trees around our house someday will make it totally different!

The view from my favorite window also has a smell. Corn chex, wheat chex, rice chex, cheerios, pretzels, and other ingredients swirling with melted butter and seasoning on the white kitchen table that I grew up watching you work at. It always smelled and tasted so delicious! A tradition, really, that you started with your mom. I visit this window every year at Christmas time as I recreate the family chex mix. Thankfully I helped you so many times! I might not remember other wise. "Jenna! Go turn the chex mix!" I'd hear you call out. In the oven, 45 minutes, turn every 15. But wait! Don't touch it yet, it's still too hot.
This window is not just chex mix, but other great memories. It's the aroma of your chili, something I've yet to master as well as you. It's the dyed Easter eggs and the Christmas cookies. It's the times I would climb on the counter as a kid to reach the potato chips in the cupboard above the sink. The kitchen is truly the heart of the home, and you made it our heart. The memories were made there, and now I look through this window as I take over the tradition of Christmas chex mix. If I close my eyes, I can still see you sitting at that white, round table, with the giant metal mixing bowl as you measure all the ingredients and mix them together. What a wonderful view, and what a wonderful smell, and oh what a wonderful smile you always gave to me.

Many places come to mind when I think about this view but the one that I keep coming back to is the view from the patio door of my mom and dad's house north of Staples, MN. This is not the house that I grew up in but rather the one that I remember my mom and dad talking about for years. I remember taking drives to the land that they were going to build the house and hearing my dad talk about the design and how they wanted the house built so that they would have a view of a scenic part of their 80 acres. Even though I did not grow up there, I have spent many hours sitting in front of that patio door window watching the hummingbirds zipping in and out for their tasty little nectar (that I have had to fill up many times). The chickadees getting their fill from the feeders and of course the squirrels showing off their unique physical abilities to have their part in it all as well. Each of my kids have spent time in front of that window taking all of this in as well. It is the common meeting place for family to sit around the table and talk smart about life, family, friends, and events. The conversation must be good because we have had some new visitors that have come to join the fun as well (see picture below).

I do not do it much anymore but many fond memories of time spent with family in the campsite with nothing for protection other than the large canvas tent that we set up the night before.

Here I am looking out the window of my new classroom. This is my 3rd room going in to my 5th year teaching. I had my first classroom for 2 years, but when I moved from 1st grade to 2nd grade I had to move into the one vacant classroom available to me. That classroom served me well also for 2 years but at the conclusion of this school year, there were 2 classrooms open, both with bigger windows and an open view. My old view was a brick wall and windows into other classrooms. As you can see with the playground, green grass, and beautiful blue sky, it's hard to beat the new view!

To other people, it's just the screen of a pop-up camper but to you it's a link to incredibly special memories. I sincerely hope that you have many, many more memories "pop up"!

Britta, your yard strikes jealousy at a quick glance and the feeling grows and grows the longer you look at your picture. In the bottom left corner I see the hand rail of a deck, something Sam and I are trying to put onto our house so that it's easier to let our dog out (hopefully dogs soon), we have a place to put our patio furniture and grill, and of course then we can use those items during nice weather. As Sam mentioned, we've had conversations about cool it would be to have a pond in your backyard aka a free skating rink. Lastly, it looks like your lawn is very well cared for! We moved into our house in October and we've very much been battling dandelions, crab grass, and creeping charlie so any tips are appreciated!

I've never been fortunate enough to have a cabin but your picture with the kayak and the sunset in the background reminds me of the camp I worked at for 6 summers during college and after. We would get new kids each week from all over Minnesota and would lead them in activities they'd normally never get the chance to do. One story in particular always stands out. At the beginning of the week we would read the weekly schedule to our cabin. One boy from cities, when I had mentioned we were going pontooning, asked what a pontoon was and had never heard of a flat topped boat. He was one of the most appreciative and thankful campers I had ever lead at that camp. Seeing the different activities that your cabin and camp had in common brought those memories rushing back. Thank you!
