The United Arab Emirates has the highest ecological footprint in the world - 10.68 gha. This is because private transportation is much more popular than public transportation, resulting in more vehicles, which means more carbon dioxide and less resources. For example, taxis are used a lot more than public transit, and private jet flights are very common as well.

A spectre is haunting Europe -- the spectre of communism. All the powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to exorcise this spectre: Pope and Tsar, Metternich and Guizot, French Radicals and German police-spies. Where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as communistic by its opponents in power? Where is the opposition that has not hurled back the branding reproach of communism, against the more advanced opposition parties, as well as against its reactionary adversaries? Two things result from this fact: I. Communism is already acknowledged by all European powers to be itself a power. II. It is high time that Communists should openly, in the face of the whole world, publish their views, their aims, their tendencies, and meet this nursery tale of the spectre of communism with a manifesto of the party itself.

Since countries are more self-centered, everyone's biocapacity is distributed unevenly. But, if a population’s Ecological Footprint exceeds the region’s biocapacity, that region runs an ecological deficit. Its demand for the goods and services that its land and seas can provide—fruits and vegetables, meat, fish, wood, cotton for clothing, and carbon dioxide absorption—exceeds what the region’s ecosystems can renew. A region in ecological deficit meets demand by importing, liquidating its own ecological assets (such as overfishing), and/or emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. If a region’s biocapacity exceeds its Ecological Footprint, it has an ecological reserve.

I believe the biggest factor that impacts ecological footprints around the world is the status of the country itself. For example, 17% of the world's population uses 83% of the world's resources. According to World Centric, that 17% represents the richer / wealthier part of the world. Plus, as mentioned in the video, our global consumption is unbalanced and not distributed properly. One great way to diminish our carbon footprint is to give up beef completely. I believe so, because red meat dwarfs use 28 times more land and 11 times more water than pork or chicken. Furthermore, The Guardian also wrote an article on this topic. Therefore, because of the reasons listed above, it is my strong opinion that wealth is a key factor in determining the ecological footprint of a country.

Referring back to the video, we know that the United States was an ecological debtor. A fact that contributes to this point shared by the World Wildlife Fund is that, the United States wastes enough food to fill 91 Empire State Buildings. As the video mentioned that it is not that the world suffers a lack of resources, it's that our global consumption is uneven. This fact elaborates on that point and goes to show that consumption of resources really is uneven, when food to fill 91 Empire State Buildings wasn't required in the first place.

Luxembourg has an incredibly high Ecological Footprint, of 15.82 gha/p. Not only that but it's known as one of the worst Ecological Debtors because of it's low Biocapacity of 1.68 gha/p. For a country that's not even as large as Ottawa, has a population lesser than Brampton's, yet an Ecological Footprint nearly DOUBLE that of the United States, it's safe to say that Luxembourg has got to pick up their act. According to The Happy Planet Index, "Luxembourg’s carbon footprint accounts for the lion’s share of its Ecological Footprint." This is because it has the Highest Car Ownership Rate, as well as the Highest Energy Consumption Rate per capita IN ALL OF EUROPE! Perhaps the increased ownership of vehicles has to do with the 'luxury' promoted by Luxembourg. The low gas prices there do nothing but encourage using vehicles more than necessary. For improvement, probably the best thing that people in Luxembourg (tourists and citizens, alike) can do is: ut down using cars as much as possible, by walking, biking, or even transiting.
