For example, the night after Dill, Jem, and Scout sneak into the Radley’s backyard, when Scout goes to bed she states that “... every scratch of feet on gravel was Boo Radley seeking revenge, every passing Negro laughing in the night was Boo Radley loose and after us; insects splashing against the screen were Boo Radley’s insane fingers picking the wire to pieces” (Lee, P.62). At the beginning of the book, Scout is not aware of the racial prejudice in Maycomb, as she develops her own misconceptions/prejudices of Boo Radley. However, at the advent of the Tom Robinson trial, Scout starts to break down after confronting a drunken mob trying to kill Robinson before he is taken to court, “The full meaning of the night’s events hit me and I began crying. Jem was nice about it: for once he didn’t remind me that people nearly nine years old didn’t do things like that” (Lee, P.177). After standing up for Tom, Scout starts to be aware of the implications of race in her hometown, which is amplified when she attends Tom's trial herself. Douglas Adam finds a perfect balance between absurdity and momentary existentialism in a world set in outer space. In one moment of the story, a depressed robot struggles to find meaning in its own life and consciousness. In the next moment, our protagonist is made fun of by his alien companions for being socially awkward at a party where they met him. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a well-crafted mix of comedy and science fiction, all in the pursuit of a universal truth: the meaning of life. (which happens to be the number 42) In a world that’s often so depressing, there should always be a moment of humor as a distraction from it all. In a way, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is similar to Star Wars. While both are drastically different, both stories contain a protagonist who is initially skeptical that they have some bigger role to play in the universe. Arthur in The Hitchhiker's Guide, and Luke Skywalker both find themselves having to fill important roles later on. For Arthur, it is managing to survive in the cold emptiness of space with the help of his friends, while for Luke, it is toppling a totalitarian dictatorship where his absent father is the right-hand man of an evil emperor. Both characters find a greater meaning: for Arthur, it is the truth of who created humanity and the Earth, along with discovering the nature of the universe itself, and for Luke, it is confronting Vader and bringing Anakin back from the dark clutches of Emperor Palpatine. Hitchhiker's Guide is much more existential than interpersonal, while Star Wars focuses much more on interpersonal relationships. Ironically, the first Star Wars movie is called A New Hope, and the actual Guide to the Galaxy in HGTTG has the signature catchphrase of: “DO NOT PANIC”.
