Because I am an American teen, Pop music is a factor of my immediate cultural milieu. Whether it be on tv, my phone, the radio in my car, or simply around campus, I am exposed to Pop music on a daily basis. However, just because I am exposed to such genre every day doesn’t mean I have to be a fan. If anything, Pop music is probably one of the last geners I would ever listen to. I simply find Pop music to be annoying. Thus it should be of no surprise when I say that I hated Katy Perry’s “Bon Appetit.” The lyrics were trash and the whole concept of the song was just weird (watching the video didn’t help. It wasn’t until after conducting conducting research for my Music Media Report 2 that the the purpose of the lyrics made sense. After doing so, what I had depicted out to be complete trash, turned into a decent piece of work. To be honest, doing so changed my entire perspective of Pop Music because, until then, I thought the sole reason for why people listened to Pop Music was because it was pleasing to the ear. Now, however, I see that some Pop songs actually speak against social issues such as Katy Perry's “Bon Appetit” which raises awareness against the way women are viewed and treated in contemporary society. Furthermore, Pop Music is DECENT genre of music to listen to when BORED. It has evolved through the decades and has existed for nearly a century now. Pop artists include Taylor Swift, The Weekend, Selena Gomez, and Justin Bieber.
