Le roi Créon a ordonné de n'enterrer qu'Étéocle, laissant sans sépulture celui qu'il considère comme traître, Polynice (ce qui, selon les Anciens, condamne son âme à errer éternellement). Quiconque enfreindra la loi sera puni de mort. La sœur d'Étéocle et de Polynice, Antigone, ose braver l'interdit et défier Créon : elle accomplit à deux reprises les rites funéraires. Découverte, elle dsera condamnée à mort, malgré l'intervention de son fiancé, Hémon, fils de Créon.   • Jean Anouilh est né à Bordeaux en 1910, d'un père tailleur et d'une mère pianiste. Ses parents s'installent à Paris où il fait ses études. 
  • Son goût pour le théâtre s'éveille très tôt. Il fait deux rencontres décisives : celle de Jean Giraudoux et celle de Jean Cocteau, qui lui font découvrir le théâtre poétique.
  • Le succès de sa première pièce, l'Hermine, l'incite à vivre de sa plume. Après des années difficiles, il rencontre deux grands animateurs de théâtre, Georges Pitoëf et André Barsacq, grâce auxquels il connaît enfin la vie de troupe. Le Voyageur sans bagages (1937) et le Bal des voleurs (1938) marquent la fin de ses difficultés.
  • Sa production est désormais aussi importante que renommée. Il signe certaines mises en scène. Il meurt à Lausanne en  1987.

  • Antigone n'est pas belle (« la maigre jeune fille noiraude et renfermée que personne ne prenait au sérieux dans la famille ») mais représente l'intransigeance et la pureté. Elle risque la mort en transgressant la loi pour son frère, qui pourtant ne l'aimait pas. Quand Créon lui révèle les coulisses politiques du drame, elle choisit la mort, non plus pour honorer son frère, mais pour ne pas pactiser avec la médiocrité : « Vous me dégoûtez tous avec votre bonheur ! ». Elle affronte avec violence le roi, son oncle (le frère de sa mère Jocaste), et revendique sa liberté : « Moi, je ne suis pas obligée de faire ce que je ne voudrais pas ! » Elle a l'orgueil d'Œdipe. En même temps, elle reste enfant : elle est affectueuse et tendre (envers sa sœur Ismène et sa nourrice). Au moment de mourir, elle est prise par la peur : « je ne sais plus pourquoi je meurs ».
  • Créon : « C'est le roi. Il a des rides, il est fatigué. Il joue au jeu difficile de conduire les hommes. » Il assume le pouvoir, après la mort d'Œdipe et de ses deux fils, avec courage, et sans illusions.        Il tente de sauver Antigone : pour cela, il lui révèle les coulisses sordides du drame. Il comprend cependant que ses efforts sont vains ; les exigences du pouvoir l'emportant même sur le désespoir de son fils : « Je suis le maître avant la loi. Plus après. ». Il finit complètement seul, son fils puis sa femme, Eurydice, s'étant suicidés. Il poursuit néanmoins son ouvrage : « Ils disent que c'est une sale besogne, mais si on ne la fait pas, qui la fera ? »
  • Ismène « est bien plus belle qu'Antigone » : elle est « éblouissante ». Elle se dit elle-même « plus pondérée » qu'Antigone. Elle réfléchit. Quelle que soit son affection pour son frère, elle ne se sent pas le courage de braver l'interdiction. Elle accepte sa faiblesse de femme et s'incline devant le pouvoir de Créon.
  • Hémon a préféré Antigone à la belle Ismène, vers qui tout le portait. Il l'aime et veut la sauver, en intercédant auprès de son père, et sans connaître les vraies raisons du choix d'Antigone. Il partage son sort par désespoir d'amour : « Crois-tu que je pourrai vivre, moi, sans elle ? »
  • Antigone prend congé de la nourrice comme elle se sépare d'Hémon et d'Ismène, avant d'affronter Créon. En disant adieu à la nourrice, Antigone perd sa dernière protection et le dernier lien avec son enfance : « Je tiens ta douce main rugueuse qui sauve de tout… Peut-être qu'elle va me sauver encore. »
  • Les gardes sont étrangers à l'univers de la tragédie : « Eux, tout ça, cela leur est égal ; c'est pas leurs oignons. Ils continuent à jouer aux cartes. » Ils représentent la force aveugle et la bêtise.

  • La pièce se déroule de façon continue, sans interruption : elle n'est pas divisée en actes, ce qui maintient la tension dramatique.
  • Elle est encadrée par deux interventions du chœur (joué par un seul personnage), qui, dans le prologue, présente les personnages et annonce le drame, puis qui commente le dénouement.Le chœur tente également de sauver Antigone et annonce à Créon la mort de sa femme, Eurydice. Il joue donc un rôle d'intermédiaire entre les spectateurs et les personnages. Il renseigne et commente.

  •  Jean Anouilh a conservé tous les éléments de la tragédie grecque : drame, lieux, personnages, mais l'a transposée à notre époque.Il a ainsi modernisé les fonctions et le mode de vie : les gardes ont des grades et des statuts comparables à ceux des soldats d'aujourd'hui ; la reine tricote pour les pauvres ; les princes ont des voitures et une vie mondaine ; la nourrice prépare du café et des tartines grillées, etc.
  • Anouilh mêle le tragique et le familier. Ce contraste est particulièrement sensible dans les conversations d'Antigone et de sa nourrice : « Allons, ma vieille bonne pomme rouge. Tu sais quand je te frottais pour que tu brilles ? »
  • Dans la tragédie antique, le destin, supérieur aux dieux eux-mêmes, frappe les hommes. Chez Sophocle, Créon, qui s'obstine dans sa décision, est coupable de démesure et se retrouve seul. Jean Anouilh supprime le caractère sacré de la tragédie. Antigone incarne la jeunesse et son intransigeance et montre que l'homme reste libre de se révolter contre l'injustice, de lui résister.
