-Can't answer this yet; will revisit once more people have completed it!
-I followed all of the teacher's directions to the best of my ability, but realized that there was lots of room for interpretation! I think it's highly possible to have several different versions of this picture that all followed the directions (so, several different "correct" versions)! I would only see a response as "incorrect" if they didn't follow one or more of the directions.
-I think it is referencing something arbitrary or someone's personal interpretation. 2+2 can equal whatever you want it to!
-Different interpretations demonstrate that we all think differently and we are all unique! And, sometimes, unique perspectives can lead us to conclusions or solutions that we may not have thought of if we were all thinking similarly!

Some similarities I noticed between my drawing and others is that they all have the same number of lines and circles. However, I see mine being extremely different as opposed to other classmates in that mine contains boxes and others do not.

When I had art class I was always taught to draw into different boxes, which may have led me to create boxes in mine as opposed to not creating boxes. I do not believe that my interpretation is wrong however because I followed all the directions given.

I believe that the expression 2 plus 2 equals fish is another way of saying that just becasue people have different ideas and intpretations does not mean that they cannot achieve the same goal as someone else. For example, we all followed the same directions given by the teacher but when we completed the task we all saw something and interpreted something differently from the directions. That does not make it wrong instead it creates a variety of different ideas and personalities. Just like fish in the sea they all have different species, colors, and personalities.

Diversity is not only important in art, but also in other classes as it allows your students to abstractly think for themselves and provide their own ideas and creativity into the classroom. It also allows us to have an open mind to others and how they may think and understand the world around them and open our eyes to see things differently.

Some of the instructions were more vague than others, so certain things like the 3 overlapping squares didn't allow for much difference in interpretation (only the location on the page), whereas the line touching 2 edges could be placed in many different ways, bigger or smaller.

My interpretation probably reflected my personality--neat/not messy. Very little overlapped unless instructed to do so. My interpretation is uniquely my own, not write or wrong compared to others.

I stick with what I think 2+2=Fish means, which is that it could mean different things to different people, beyond the numbers added together.

We all bring different view points and experiences from life to how we interpret anything, and so it is important to be understanding & considerate of others' interpretations, because we have not lived their lives.

The similarities I noticed were many of us drew the first three lines in the middle of the page. The squares in many also overlap in a similar way where it forms a pyramid stack.

My interpretation was based off the similar process I base my choices in home decor. To me, everything was organized in a way that made me feel like the page was evenly decorated. My interpretation is correct because it is uniquely my own creation.

My interpretation of "2+2=Fish" is that is means that ideas can be interpreted in many ways.

People will interpret information differently and anything involving a creative process is uniquely an individual's. People may see the world in similar ways but no one can truly process and share the same personal experiences.

Hi! It is Sandra. The similarities I noticed not many of us can make good circles. Almost all triangles are small. The dots to me gave a great texture of warmth to the blank paper. Really strong divided line in the middle. My interpretation is we are drawing a solar system in our own perspective. Which now I understand the 2+2=fish everyone has a different way of seeing things, different ideas but we can achieve an assignment or goal. To me it might be the solar system, for someone else might be their thoughts, not sure that there is a right or wrong answer. Everyone followed instructions and since art is subjective and a way to express ourselves, this was a personal creation of what each of us understood.

For the basic shapes, I see that everyone has added them, just not in the same way or location. For the less specific shapes, like wavy line, I see that people interpret wavy as different.

I drew each step as it was described. The only time where I thought I might be "incorrect" was there was an early instruction that said to connect 2 edges of the paper, so I drew a short diagonal line in the upper left corner. Then we had to draw a diagonal line in the top left corner, and I thought, hmm, I already got one!

2+2=fish is an abstract thought. All of these images are abstract. They could be interpreted differently by different people.

Different interpretations can lead to innovation. As an engineering teacher I loath showing my students examples from past projects. The very first question they ask is, "Which one was best?" because that is what they are going to build.

I've noticed that all students added the shapes that you specifically stated. The shapes and lines all were placed in different spots and the lines like the diagonal one was longer on some sheets because you didn't specifically say draw it 2 inches or 3 inches that was left to interpretation.

i've always played close attention to detail and I enjoy woodworking which involves a lot of angles so maybe that played a role in my thoughts. Most of us filled out the whole paper. Some of the differences are that nobody's pictures look the same. There are no identical drawings. I used my imagination when I put my drawings. I don't think there were any right or wrong interpretations. After seeing all this, I think 2+2=fish means so many different things depending on what people have in their minds. And you see, everyone did follow the instructions but was able to have their own take on it. I'm assuming no one overthought and just drew the first thing that came to their mind.

Originally I put, "opinions vs. facts" for what I thought about for 2+2=fish, and I kind of stand by that. All our versions was the truth for us, which makes our opinions but the fact of the matter is, we all did what we were told to do, regardless of the outcome looking so different from one another.

I felt like everyone did a great job. I notice i clustered my shapes together whereas many spaced out their composition. A lot of us have our "line touching two ends of the paper" straight and down the middle- but not all are straight, some are wavy. My interpretation was just my style of how I like to see my own works, clustered, unbalanced, and some fun dot groupings and texture. It doesn't make it wrong, just uniquely me! I think it means that not always is the answer 4 (2+2=fish). I think it is important to always look at things from all angles and not to get stuck expecting the same outcomes or settings for everything in art class, math, or out in the world.

One major similarity that I observed is just about everyone used most the the surface of the paper for their drawing. A difference that I noticed is no two pictures are alike. We all heard the same instructions, however we all interpreted them differently.

There was no rhyme or reason that led me to my interpretation. I did have questions wondering if it should be landscape or portrait? Should the lines go all the way across the paper to the end. In the end, I just drew without thinking too much.

After viewing all of the portraits, I feel like 2+2=fish could simply mean "different".

I think it's great that people have different interpretations in art and other content areas. Its reflective of our different experiences, knowledge, and backgrounds. I feel like this adds more depth to a persons artistic abilities. Less room for judgement.

Precise expressions are covered by other disciplines. In addition, Art "thinking" can help other disciplines to evolve, because new discoveries rarely come from thinking the same way all the time.

We were given the same instruction however based on self interpretation all of us did this different.
I chose lay my drawing out the way I did because I wanted minimal objects touching. I was trying to see if there was an image being created or if it would like like a scrambled mess. I don’t think anyone’s is wrong it’s how we interpreted it.
I think it means that we can all be given the same steps but with our own interpretations we can get random or different answers
Art is subjective, there’s no right or wrong.
I notice that others pictures and my own have multiple similarities but more differences. On some pictures I can't even comprehend myself what others were thinking or why they did not think like I did or why I did not think similar to them when following instructions. I do not think anyone's drawing is incorrect. We all followed the instructions given to us, and we already know we all think and are different from one another. After seeing all these different interpretations, I still have no idea what 2+2=fish is. Maybe it is just a simple way of reaching the different comprehension process and creativity/imagination of many different people. I think interpreting things differently is so unique and its cool because it brings new ideas and makes art more interesting. - Jordan Burns

When looking at everyone's drawing, the shapes and steps you asked us to draw are all represented, but all images are clearly different. for example, the three overlapping squares you asked us to draw: I decided to make the squares overlap very closely while some people had the boxes far apart but touching corners. I'm not sure I put much thought into the interpretation of my drawing I was simply following your direction and doing what felt natural for me. I didn't overthink it because you told us there was no right or wrong answer. After this exercise, I think 2+2=fish simply means the interpretations everyone has for a task may be different but they may possess some core commonality. Different interpretations are important because it shows that everyone has their own opinions we may agree on some things but we will also disagree and see many things differently from one another.

I noticed that all of our art had the same elements such as shapes and lines, but their locations and sizes varied. These differences came from the fact that exact locations and sizes were not specified in the instructions.

After doing this activity and looking at the other interpretations, I think that 2+2=fish means that directives like 2+2 and the instructions given during this activity can mean different things to different people.

I was expecting to see a lot of differences in the drawings because of the vagueness of the directions. Also, you mentioned the assignment being abstract which supported my assumption of everyone's drawing being different. I noticed that there were no similarities between the drawings except for the number of lines, squares, circles, and triangle.

After hearing your explanation, I now think that 2+2=fish isn't really a math statement so any answer is right (the assignment had nothing to do with drawing fish which was my initial thought).

After looking at all the drawings, I realized that when you instructed 2 different textures people used mostly dots and zig zag lines. I also noticed that we all interpreted what you were saying differently. Some people drew lines that took up the whole paper, while others didn't. I now thik 2 +2= Fish means everyone's interpretation is different of an equation. Especially instructions with no visual representations.

I expected to see a little more similarity but really enjoyed the differences. I was most surprised by the addition of color and extra textures in some of them, and I liked the creativity but the "rule follower" in me was trying to do just exactly what you said. I liked the mix of more detailed instructions (like the overlapping squares) and also the prompts where we had more freedom (like choosing which line to darken/thicken). I still have no idea what 2+2=Fish means but it was a fun activity nonetheless!

1) For the similarities, I noticed that many of the similar shapes (circles, lines, squares) were exactly the same for many of my classmates as provided with the instruction. For differences, the class was all over the place with their responses and placement of items within the page. Some in different locations, some shapes bigger, smaller, etc.
2) Knowing myself as a person. I am a rule follower, perfectionist, and organized. I like to space my items out within a space and follow directions based on what the teacher provides. I believe there is no right or wrong answer to this task, as it depends on someone's visual representation derived from verbal cues.
3) After this activity, I believe that 2+2 = fish means that drawing is not supposed to make complete sense and concrete with answers. Any answer is correct, as long as the attempt is there.
4) Interpretation is important in art because that is how creativity and unique designs are formed. Without this, tasks would be boring, answers would be the same, and thus nothing different would ever be created.

I believe that this statement means that not everyone has the same perception of space, shapes, and spatial arrangements. We all perceive art differently. As demonstrated by this exercise some of us follow the basic instructions and ended up with "utilitarian piece, while others had more sense or harmony and beauty.
Carolina
