His ability to talk and cramped facial expression has gotten more severe and he can barely talk. We only visited him for a few hours because he was so tired, but I hope he gets better.

Genes often correlated with Parkinson's Disease include SNCA, LRRK2, GBA, PRKN (Parkin), PINK1, DJ-1 (PARK7) and VPS35. Depending on if the person has these certain genes will result in the different forms of Parkinson's. Out of all of these genes, PRKN (Parkin) is most related in autosomal recessive Parkinson's Disease through genetic mutation. Because it is caused by a recessive expression, both copies of the recessive (PRKN) gene mutation need to be included in the genotype its phenotype to be expressed.

The age at which Parkinson's is most likely to develop is around 60 years old. This is due to the aging process, as we get older it is natural for the body to not be as efficient in cellular repairs, leading to declines in neurological functions. Men are typically at higher risk of developing Parkinson's disease compared to women, due to increased exposure to toxins and head trauma from men. Genetics play a role, someone who has a family history of Parkinson's disease is 2x more likely to develop Parkinson's later in life. Repeated blows to the head can cause cellular damage leading to the potential development of PD.

Deep brain stimulation may be a long term treatment for individuals who suffer from Parkinson's Disease. The expected cost of DBS is between $35,000 to $100,000. The potential that DBS is covered by insurance is high but depends on individual insurance policies. On a scale of 1-5 the likelihood of this treatment being fully covered is about a 3. If someone refuses to take the treatment due to costs it would mean a lower quality of life as the symptoms progress. It would also mean managing symptoms with medication and therapy alone which is still costly and leads to more difficulty in every day life.

Continuous Infusion Therapies may be suitable for patients who suffer from Parkinson's Diseases as a form of long term treatment. The average cost for Continuous Infusion Therapies tend to be around $40,000-$50,000 dollars per year. On a scale from 1-5 where 5 is the most likelihood for insurance to cover the long term therapy, Continuous Infusion Therapies are deemed to be a 4.5. FDA approved therapies such as Continuous Infusion Therapies for Parkinson's Disease are usually covered by insurance. If someone were to NOT seek treatment due to the cost they might suffer from the following long-term consequences: increased dyskinesia (uncontrolled movement), cognitive fatigue, depression, anxiety, worse off periods and lower functional lifespan.

During focused ultrasound (FUS) medical professionals use ultrasound beams to target tiny areas of cells that can cause motor symptoms by Parkinson's. The beams are harmless on their own, but when further concentrated into multiple rays, they can create enough heat to kill neurons in the brain that contribute to tremor patients Parkinson's symptoms. Different areas can be traversed to erase various symptoms of Parkinson's. The cost of FUS treatment can be anywhere from $20,000-$40,000 depending on insurance coverage of the patient.

Insurance coverage for FUS varies, as some private insurers and Medicare coverage the procedure, especially for tremor-dominant Parkinson's. Unfortunately coverage is not universal and typically depends on a case by case decision by the insurer. Long term consequences that may occur are worsening of untreated symptoms like tremors, muscle stiffness, bradykinesia, and loosing essential abilities such as walking, writing, speaking, which can potentially decrease quality of life.
