An issue that is relevant to the novel Everything, Everything, is Madeline's physical illness. Madeline's illness is called the bubble baby disease. The formal name for bubble baby disease is Severe Combined Immunodeficiency. This terrible disease that Madeline has is distinct because its "defining characteristic is usually a severe defect in both the T- & B-lymphocyte systems" (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency). According to the main character of this book, Madeline, "Basically, I'm allergic to the world. Anything can trigger a bout of sickness" (Yoon 3). Additionally, Madeline's disease almost killed her when she was a baby, so she is definitely living a very difficult life.
Severe Combined Immunodeficiency is very rare. The disease causes the person to basically not have an immune system. As a result, "the child's body is unable to fight off infections" (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency). Madeline, in Everything, Everything has to stay on on SCID row, which ends up meaning that she has not left her house in 17 years. According to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, "SCID is a group of inherited disorders" (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency). Also, many genetic defects can cause SCID.

In the book, Everything, Everything, a theme is very evident. One of the major themes that are portrayed is that one should live their lives to the fullest and appreciate it. Madeline quotes, "but another part of me, the newer part, isn't ready to give up the world I'm starting to know" which shows how she has not been able to go out and live her life because of her disease (Yoon 216). However, normal people that can go out and live their lives do not appreciate it as much as they should. Instead of taking things for granted, Yoon's theme that is portrayed in the book means that people should appreciate their life and the 'freeness' that they have.

The image below represents this theme because it depicts someone appreciating the beauty that is around them. The person in the picture is living their life to their fullest potential, instead of taking things for granted.

So far in the novel, I have learned about Severe Combined Immunodeficiency. Aside from learning a brief definition and a few side-effects, the disease was not elaborated on. However, the book has broadened my perspective on how essential the relationship between a mother and daughter is. This relationship is absolutely sacred and is catastrophic when damaged. Sometimes Madeline says, "I wish again that I could talk to my mom about this" (Yoon 94). In this modern day culture, children are distancing themselves from their parents. Madeline was close with her mother, but culture was yet another reason why she began to lie. The lying furthered the plot, but also caused additional problems to their relationship.

The picture below relates to my reflection because it shows a mother reprimanding her daughter. In the book I am reading, Madeline lies to her mother about spending time with Olly and her mother has to punish her. This displays the relationship that they have in the novel.
