Someone in Andover, with the last name Ascher was murdered in her newspaper shop. The main suspect is her husband who regularly threatened her and was rude to her. When searching the shop, they found a railway map (an A B C).

The inspectors all go over to the Barnard's house, speaking with the parents of Elizabeth Barnard. As they were making their way up into the house to search, Hastings came across Megan Barnard, the sister. Hastings and Poirot ask her about her sister, and the relationship she had with the fiance. He is described as the quiet type with a jealous streak and anger kept down until it blew up.

The focus shifts back to Hastings who is annoyed at Poirot for relaxing during this time of distress over the next murder.

there was another murder but instead of it being the letter D is was E. the murderer was sitting next to someone with a name that starts with D and someone with a name that starts with E. Mr. Downes moved away from ABC and ABC thought the man on the other side of him was Mr. Downes.
