How Does VB Work?

VB starts by teaching mands – most basic type of language. Once the student makes a request, the teacher or therapist repeats the words and presents the object or item that that was requested. The teacher repeats the word again to reinforce the meaning being the word. (Note: The student does not have to say the actual word for that person to receive the desired object or item). The first attempt at requesting can be anywhere from pointing, saying sounds, or signing (it does not have to be the correct sign either). The student learns to communicate by positive results. Shaping then occurs to say or sign the actual word.

VB is typically taught by 80 easy and 20 hard along with a ratio of reinforcement (sporadic reinforcement). This reduces the student to feel less frustrated and increase motivation.
