Her poems and discretional conversations directly reflect most of her home life in England with four younger brothers.

Duffy’s early education was shaped by her participation at convent schools, which influenced her journalism into themes such as faith and identity. Remarkably, she began publishing her poetry in small magazines at fourteen years old. She later attended Liverpool University which earned her a degree in philosophy in 1977. This ultimately became the catalyst for Duffy to immerse herself in the literary world. (Poetry Season)

At 16 years of age, Duffy began a relationship with poet Adrian Henri, living with him she met LGBTQ+ poet Jackie Kay, with whom she had a 15-year relationship. They met in the early 1980s, when both were emerging writers in the UK literary atmosphere, and soon got closer as their friendship deepened. When their relationship ended, their friendliness and community influence represented the importance of emotional support in the literary world. (Allan, Vicky)
