I do not understand the reasoning behind deviating away from the Wonders curriculum in the order in which it was designed. I know there was research behind the Wonders curriculum prior to it being released to us years ago so I think it should be followed as it was designed. Our school followed the pacing guide last year and our students made significant gains. Why change what worked?

I feel like we taught reading last year with Wonder's pacing. (going in their order) We saw our students grow tremendously this way. I feel this year we are all over the place and are having to go back to reteach standards that are skipped due to pacing. We seem very unorganized and scattered. Plus the tests are extremely difficult to find on mastery connect. This makes it difficult to find in time to make our copies. I believe the way Wonders created the program to go was researched and planned to be more beneficial for all involved.

-The pacing guide & gradual release documents are easy to use with how assessments are graded.
-The reading gradual release document does not seem developmentally appropriate for how many students are reading below grade level. For example, unit 2 week 1 wonders students had to read the text by themselves. A handful of students were ready for this while it sent a large amount of students into frustration, a sense of failure, and a loss of interest in reading. It would be nice if we could gradually release students as they are ready - maybe this would look like testing in small guided reading groups to individualize instruction a little more for each learner.

-The formatting on the reading and math assessment were not set up for first grade. The test was VERY close together. It needs to be spaced out between each question/answer set even if it requires using more paper to copy each test.
-Some of the numbers and answer choices (A, B, C, D, etc) were not formatted neatly so you could not easily tell what went with each choice/question.
-Many of the images were difficult to recognize (ex: finding the tiny rectangle in the image on the math test - it was difficult to tell what some of the clip art images were)
-We should be able to use Wonders reading unit tests and unit tests for Investigations math as our summative assessment vs using this benchmark assessment and adding on yet another test
-Consistently testing first graders is not developmentally appropriate - we could be using this extra time to teach our students how to read. The test did not seem beneficial to help us develop our instruction going forward. We are aware of students strengths and areas of growth needed.
-Seemed thrown together quickly.
-The questions are not written very well for an assessment.
-This seems very repetitive with assessments we are already giving. For example: if a student couldn’t identify the word sit on the wonders test, spell it on the spelling test, or read it during guided reading, we know - we have seen the success/work needed for each student. We are progress monitoring and know our students!!
-Given to teachers very last minute. It would have been nice to have this to look over before vs receiving it the Friday afternoon before we administer it Monday morning.

Lower performing students "just click." It frequently takes students more than one day to complete the weekly Wonders test, also. I find that students know the skill/standard, but the wording on the weekly assessments is not plain enough for them to realize what is being asked. It would be more beneficial to teach Wonders in sequence because they get tested on skills they have not seen yet when it is done out of order. A writing/research/technology day would be great to add in sometimes.

We gave Benchmark Assessments the week leading up to Christmas break. The kids are not nearly as focused for what they perceive as additional random testing. As a grade level, we discussed wishing we could have given the Benchmark assessments the week before. This could have been done by adding in two I/E days after the U3W2 test. This would have pushed the U3W3 test by two days. We would have finished up that assessment and still had a few days of PBL. While yes the kids would still have assessments the week leading up to Christmas break, it would have provided a little more structure and helped us stress the importance of trying their best on the Benchmark assessments. Otherwise, the pacing guide looks good.
