(Heffernan & Lewison, 2003, p. 437). In other words, the final goal of the lesson was not for the students to simply understand and recognize the fundamentals of writing and to show those in your work but to recognize what a text was calling attention to, what influence it put forth and to help the students seek to have the same kind of purpose in their writing.

In writing, instead of focusing on topics of little to no substances often just for the purpose of meeting a standard requirement, it is used to address a variety of social issues both locally and globally. It is used not only to teach a skill but to make a positive impact on society.

The use of technology in literacy curriculum allows students to read and access knowledge from an almost unlimited supply of sources giving them a more global view and helping them to recognize issues that need to be changed. It also gives a greater number of people (include young students) the ability to get involved in society (governmental and otherwise) to advocate for change. As Montgomery put it in her article, "Even our youngest learners can therefore become empowered by producing counter-hegemonic digital media, such as podcasts, to share their voices and to promote democratic social change" (Montgomery, 2014, p. 203)

SVZ comments: the local/global difference is most glaring in terms of difference. I see the technology piece as a shift, but always think back on the new tech of the pencil (back in the day) and how that was a shift as well. Tools seem to provide new ways of engaging with content. Messages to the larger/broader public need a different venue that the classroom wall as you noted! Thank you...fun to use padlet for this.
