1821

Expanded voting rights to non-property owning white man.

As long as a (white man) paid their taxes or served in the military they were protected to vote in elections. This increasing democratic policies toward equality protected their rights.

1870

Expanded suffrage to African American men.

Protected voting rights regardless of skin color. Legislation worked to grant right to vote to previous slaves or men, even if their skin was not white. This was added to the Constitution to be upheld by states.

1920

Extended suffrage to women.

Details that voting rights can't be restricted due to one's gender. Opens up avenue towards gender equality. Made it illegal to deny citizens the right to vote, simply based on their gender. Thus, letting women have the voting rights, too.

1924

Extends suffrage to Native Americans.

Allows access and validates U.S. citizenship status for Native Americans. It then recognizes their constitutional right to vote. Lets those Native Americans born in the US has voting rights.

1952

Expanded suffrage to Asian-American citizens.

Abolished discriminatory race policy to US citizens. Now, Asian Americans were able to become citizens and have the right to vote.

1961

Expanded suffrage to D.C. residents.

The addition to the Constitution formally recognized DC residents with the constitutional rights as other US citizens, right to vote in elections.

1964

Expanded suffrage for African Americans and minority groups and women.

All groups granted a Constitutional amendment protecting right to vote. Helps minority and women classes remain citizenship right to vote in elections. Also removed the poll tax payment to all more voters access.

1965

Expanded suffrage to African Americans and minorities.

This stripped the racist wording to allow minorities more access to voting. Discrimination in legislation is a violation and not permitted with this act. ie. literacy tests, IQ tests, of the sort were ruled out and stripped from use.

1971

Expanded voting rights to legal adults, those 18 and up.

After angry draft men can serve country in war but not vote, the legal voting age was changed to the draft age of 18. This represents more of the population and ensures access to people who are old enough to qualify.

1975

Expanded suffrage to discriminated against minority groups.

A permanent ban to discriminatory tests is made (literacy and IQ tests). Also includes that for elections, ballots and such materials must have accurate translations that minority voters can understand. Appeals to the minorities to include them better.

1984

Expanded suffrage to elderly and handicapped folks.

Ensures proper access for disabled folk to maneuver at polling sites. ie. proper ramps or voting stations for handicapped or elderly voters, to be sure to provide them equal access in the voting process.
