"But Finny pressed his advantage. Not because he wanted to be forgiven for missing the meal -- that didn't interest him at all, he might have rather enjoyed the punishment if it was done in some novel and unknown way. He pressed his advantage because he saw that Mr. Prud'homme was pleased, won over in spite of himself" (22).

Here we see Gene appreciating Finny's strength of Social Intelligence, specifically in being aware of the motives and feelings of others and knowing what makes other people tick. Despite being the student, Finny is clearly able to influence Mr. Prud'homme's emotions, and takes advantage of that skill to manipulate the conversation to his own advantage.

“…his voice soaring and plunging in its vibrant sound box, his eyes now and then widening to fire a flash of green across the room.”

Zest—Throughout the chapter, we see examples of Phineas getting away with things most others normally would not. Though he gets carried away at times, this very clearly displays the strength of zest and vitality. Phineas finds excitement in so much of what he does, is constantly very energetic, and lives life at Devon as an adventure.

“There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little.”

Perspective + Judgement—Gene is able to acknowledge his feelings towards Phineas, even if they are negative. He shows a good use of perspective in this, looking at his relationship with Finny in a way that makes sense. He also employs good judgement, weighing the issue of his jealously fairly in his relationship with Finny.

“Phineas was going to get away with even this.”

Social Intelligence—Phineas has a good deal of social intelligence, as was displayed by this instance of misbehavior. He was able to figure out what to say and do in order to stay out of trouble, even with someone as pointy as Mr. Patch-Withers. He also shows humor, brining a mile to even Mr. Patch-Withers, who is displayed as someone who does not often joke.

This worked for him as he was aware of what he could say to get out of the situation he had gotten into.

Two Examples of Character Strengths Expressed in Chapter Two

1. One example chapter 2 had shown a character strength being expressed had been when Finny explained himself for missing Dinner last night. The character strength Finny had shown in this example was bravery. The author shows this example and how Finny said it when they wrote, “(page 7-8)’You know that tree(…) The real reason, sir, was that we just had to jump out of that (…) We had to do that, naturally,’ he went on, ‘because we’re all getting ready for the war.’ ” This quote shows the reason why Finny and Gene jumped from the tree as Finny supports from the quote which backs up the character strength to be bravery. In other words, it took Finny bravery to do the jump as well as to prepare for the war.

2. Another example of a character strength expressed in chapter two was Finny saving Gene while they were jumping from the tree. This example can be shown when the author wrote, “(page 13) If Finny hadn’t come up right behind me … if he hadn’t been there … I could have fallen on the bank and broken my back!” This quote supports that Finny did save Gene which shows Finny expressing a character strength call Teamwork [social responsibility, loyalty, citizenship]. Finny undoubtedly shows this strength in this example as he is acting as if a teammate being responsible for Gene’s wellbeing by putting himself in danger in the air to try and save Gene.

"It was quite a compliment to me, as a matter of fact, to have such a person choose me for his best friend"

To me this passage from page 29 shows Gene's Love for Phineas as he admires the close relation he has with him and notes the way Phineas compliments him. Gene also shows this character strength by talking about the 'extraordinary' person Phineas is.

On page 30 I saw that Gene was scared to jump out of the tree, "afraid to jump out of that tree? I expect it'll be a pleasant jump."

I don't think Gene was wanting to jump because he was scared.

On page 28 it talks about Phineas being very happy from what we talked about today in class I don't feel like it shows happiness with him that much it shows more selfishness.

"I turned back toward the river, moved a few more steps along the limb, sprang out and fell into the deep water."
This passage shows that both Gene and Finny have zest and Vitality as a character strength because they are just having a good time and as the definition says, feeling alive.

"If I had fallen akwardly enough I could have been killed."

This just showed me that not only is Finny aware of what is going around him but he is truly kind and loves his friend Gene. He could have fallen with Gene if he did not catch he as quickly as he did and that just really shows that he cares for him.
