  • The U.S and Britain occupied the Oregon country we wanted all the land.
  •  when James Polk became president, "54-40 or fight" was widespread.
  •  We couldn't afford another war with Britain, and Britain was less defensive.
  • compromise was made. We got Oregon country at the 49 parallel. We got the Columbia river and they got Vancouver island.
