Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean and in the Arctic Ocean. Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe. Iceland's capital and largest city is Reykjavík, which is home to over 65% of the population. Iceland is the biggest part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises above sea level, and its central volcanic plateau is erupting almost constantly. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence keep summers chilly, and most of its islands have a polar climate.

A good part of the electricity, the 75% of electricity in Iceland is given by the force of water in waterfalls. One of the most known is Gullfoss, about 30 mt high, with a capacity at about 150.000 liters par second in summer and 68.000 in winter also one of the biggest tourists attractions, his is just one of 10.000 waterfalls in all around iceland. You may think: there will certainly be hydroelectric plants in Iceland, right? Yes, that's correct, but not a lot, just ten to be clear, because damming all of the 10.000 waterfalls could be a sort of destruction of a big valuable patrimony.

The Democracy

The passage emphasizes the significance of freedom and rights, cautioning against taking them for granted. It highlights the historical struggles that have shaped democracy in Italy, Europe, and North America, contrasting this with nations where democratic values remain elusive. Democracy, a core principle of the United Nations, hinges on respecting human rights, free elections, and universal suffrage. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966) underscore these principles. The text underscores that these rights, including those specific to certain groups, are crucial for democracy, ensuring access to information, freedom from persecution, and equal treatment. It also warns about the contemporary risk to democracy, citing the rise of intolerant populist movements in advanced nations. The passage concludes by highlighting the ongoing challenges of building, preserving, and enhancing the quality of democracies in the 21st century.

The Magna Carta, written in 1215, is a historic document that established the principle that everyone, including the king, is subject to the law. It is considered a foundational document in constitutional history. The Magna Carta addresses issues of royal authority, legal rights, and limits on the monarchy's power. It laid the groundwork for concepts such as due process and the idea that the ruler's authority should be restrained by law.
