He just kept calling out "Good night Sally baby" (167)

He claims that this place is very sophisticated and full of phonies. Based on his character this doesnt seem like the type of place that Holden would enjoy. "Its one of those places where its supposed to be sophisticated and all, and the phonies are coming in the window". Page 157 This is a decline for him because now instead of just drinking his problems away he is drinking in a place that goes against all of his morals.

'"Have just one more drink," I told him. Please I'm lonesome as hell. No kidding."' (165) Holden is so lonely and depressed that he has turned to drinking and being with Carl Luce. They had a conversation when the whole time Holden is trying to "please" Luce in his own way because he wants to keep talking to him because he is so lonely and Luce just keeps telling him to be quiet or to change subjects. Holden's mental state is declining because he ends up relying on drinking in order to feel better. He feels happier when he is not in reality. He wants to tear himself away from the world and when he gets drunk he is able to do that.

After she rejects his idea he says that he wouldn't even want to go with her but that he meant it when he asked. He then states "I swear to God I'm a madman." page 149.

You can see a decline in Holden s mental state when sally shows up ten minutes late, he feels like marrying he even though he doesn't particularly like her. This is his first real attempt and connect with a girl, and his emotions fly out of control and he seems to sense he's loosing his grip. Also when he proposes the idea to go travel around with Sally, Sally reacts realistically to his fantasy of escape from society and adulthood . Sally is playing life by the rules , which drives Holden into rage because as we know from his past experiences that Holden does not follow the rules he makes us his own and he also believes that everyone else should play by those rules.
