1)Read the article
2) Answer the following Question- Which legend of Rome's origin is more likely to be based on fact, explain your answer.
3) Before you answer question, make sure you type first name and period you attend Social Studies for extra credit.

Roman Origins

Several different legends describe how Rome began. One legend about the founding of Rome is contained in The Aeneid (ih• NEE• ihd), written by the Roman poet Virgil. He described what took place after the Greeks captured the city of Troy. First, the Trojan Aeneas (ih• NEE• uhs) and his soldiers escaped from Troy to find a new homeland. The Trojans settled in Italy and waged war. Then Aeneas married a local king’s daughter. Their marriage united the Trojans with a group of Latin-speaking people who lived in this region. Because of this, Aeneas is known as the "father" of the Romans.

Another legend describes the founding of Rome much differently. This tale involves twin brothers, Romulus (RAHM• yuh• luhs) and Remus (REE• muhs). After they were born, they were left beside the Tiber River. A female wolf discovered the boys and cared for them. A shepherd and his wife found and raised the twins.

When the brothers grew up, they planned to build a city along the Tiber River. However, the two boys argued about the construction of the city. Remus made fun of the walls that Romulus built. The Roman historian Livy (LIH• vee) tells what happened next:

"Then followed an angry altercation [argument]; heated passions [emotions] led to bloodshed; in the tumult [uproar] Remus was killed. The more common report is that Remus contemptuously [spitefully] jumped over the newly raised walls and was forthwith killed by the enraged Romulus, . . . Romulus thus became sole ruler, and the city [Rome] was called after him, its founder."

—from History of Rome, by Livy

The legend about Rome's origins contained in The Aeneid seems more likely to be based on fact. The Aeneid written by the Roman poet Virgil, contains a believable story that includes true events, people and places, such as the city of Troy and the Trojan soldiers. The story also includes the events of war and marriage which are two completely plausible events, unlike in the legend of the two brothers where they are left by a stream as babies and raised by wolves. In conclusion, only one of the mentioned events could have possibly happened in real life.

Based on the Aeneid that was written by Virgil both o the legends could be believable. The first legend it mentions could possibly be true because the Greeks captured the city of Troy causing the Trojans to flee to find new land. Then when they settled in Italy they waged war, then the Aeneas married a locals king's daughter. After the Aeneas married her their marriage united with a group of Trojans with a group of Latin speaking people that lived in that region. So, that mentioned marriage and war which two things that happened a lot in that time. The Aeneas was named the "father" of Romans for the reason of the marriage. So, based on the fact of Aeneid that legend seems more realistic for that time

The legend of Rome's origin contained in the Aeneid is more likely to be based on fact. In this legend the Roman poet, Virgil, wrote of the Greeks, Trojans, and Latin-speaking people (Italians). He wrote of how the Greeks conquered Troy and the Trojan Aeneas and his men fled to Italy for a new home which they soon conquered. Virgil also said Aeneas united the people through marrying a king's daughter. This story includes true people and places of that time period as well as very plausible events such as war between powers and using marrige to unite adversaries (a common tactic after conquering). This is more likely to have happened then the legend of Romulus and Remus, where the two sons were have said to be nursed by a wild wolf and then raised tbecome selfish and murderous rulers.

The legend of Rome's origin that was more likely based on fact was The Aeneid written by the Roman poet Virgil. This legend describes what happened after the Greeks captured the city of Troy. It talks about the Trojan Aeneas and his soldiers escaping from Troy and how they settled in Italy. It also talks about the marriage of Aeneas and a king's daughter, which led to uniting the Trojans with a group of Latin speaking people. All of this explains a realistic story which includes real people and places. The other legend shows a much rather silly, unrealistic story. It talks about how twin brothers were left by a river and discovered by a female wolf, who took care of them. This is not possible/realistic because most likely if a wolf saw two babies left alone, the wolf would have eaten them, not parent them. In conclusion, the legend The Aeneid was more likely to based on fact compared to the other legend because of its realistic events.

Before answering, I must say that I strongly agree with Ava. Reading the passage, the first paragraph contains the sentence "One legend about the founding of Rome is contained in the Aeneidi, written by Roman poet Virgil." it later says he described, so this meaning he had somehow gained a visual for this legend. And Virgil being a Trojan himself, could have experienced these events for himself. Virgil describes many events in this such as the capturing of Troy by Greece and how Aeneas and his troops were fortunate enough to have flied previously before Troy's capture. Also as I compare the legends with one another, the first legend about Virgil seems more "real" than two sons being left by a river and later raised by wolves. In conclusion, the only event that could have possibly happened is written down in the first paragraph.

The legend of Rome's origin that was more likely based on a fact is Aeneid written by Virgil. I think this because it has more information about the greeks and the captured city ,Troy. It talks about the true events of the soldiers and the city. Unlike the other two Aeneid talking about the brothers.

The legend of Rome's origin is more likely to be based on fact. The legend gives you information on what happened when the Greeks captured the city of Troy. It gives information on how the trojans settled and waged war. All of this explains real people and places. The event of Aeneid seems to be possible. This fact, seems to be more understandable than the tail of the two brothers who were cared and raised by wolves. In this event, there is less information and seems to be rather unrealistic.
