The word Cupeno is of Spanish derivative, adopting the native-place name Kupa. Eno means someone who lives or hails from Kupa.

The hot sulfur springs in Cupa territories were becoming very popular to tourists and visitors. The popularity of the destination eventually led to the expulsion of the Cupans from their homeland. When California governor John Dowey was elected, he purchased a good deal of the Cupan territory. He then filed a lawsuit expelling the Cupans from the land. Despite arguments by the Cupan people, the judge sided with Dowey, and the Cupans lost their land. They were relocated to a 10,000 acre reservation in Pala, California. This territory was already occupied by the Luiseno, marking the first time two tribes were put in the same reservation.

Before 1810, the Cupans had very little contact with any outsiders whether they were Spanish or other. Pioneers who trekked through southern route going west traveled directly through their territory. The county started raising the taxes on their land. They teamed up with other tribes to revolt against the taxes, but last second, the Cahuila leader opted out to keep peace. Garra, the Pala leader was executed and the village of Cupa was burned.
