Mary's actions we know for sure are because of her past with Ray, her mom, and her dead, unknown father. For Momma, however,  we have no idea why she chocked and swung Alyssa by her feet (if Mary is telling the truth) other than her having some sort of mental illness. "...it is impossible for someone who was not abused to become an abuser." Momma as a child was probably abused which led to the abuse and death of Alyssa, and the lack of mother figure in Mary's life. It also says an abuser doesn’t become a abuser without formerly being abused. This would just have triggered a chain of events since we can assume Mary was also abused. Even if she wasn’t physically, the hatred coming from her mother is enough to do psychological damage with can be emotional abuse.
