Excerpt from "The Silent Patient"

Sometimes it's hard to grasp why the answers to the present lie in the past. A simple analogy might be helpful: a leading psychiatrist in the field of sexual abuse once told me that she had, in thirty years of extensive work with pedophiles, never met one who hadn't himself been abused as a child. This doesn't mean that all abused children go on to be abusers, but it is impossible for someone who was not abused to become an abuser. No one is born evil. As Wincott put it, "A baby cannot hate the mother without the mother first hating the baby." As babies, we are innocent sponges, blank slates, with only the most basic needs present: to eat, shit, love, and be loved. But something goes wrong, depending on the circumstances into which we are born, and the house in which we grow up. A tormented, abused child can never take revenge in reality, as she is powerless and defenseless, but she can - and must - harbor vengeful fantasies in her imagination. Rage, like fear, is reactive."

the part in the silent patient "a baby cannot hate the mother without the mother first hating the baby..." connects with mary's situation becasue in her past she trusted he mom and thought they had a really good relationship until her mom started having her "bad days". Mary knew that her mom had issues but still loved her until her mom blamed her for killing alyssa. then when she got sent to jail her whole mindset changed from being obedient to being cautious with the people and things around her. Mary's went through so much when she was in jail.

I think this relates to Mary because just like in this excerpt Mary keeps denying the assumptions that she killed Alyssa and claiming that her mother did it instead. Mary's mother doesn't talk about what happened (i think).

In the silent patient the doctor states" A baby cannot hate the mother without without the mother first hating the baby". The doctor's explanation of the cycle of hate between a mother and her child relates to Mary's relationship with her mother. Even if Mary's mother didn't abuse her physically the neglect we see through Mary's eye's proves how little love was shown.

"But something goes wrong, depending on the circumstances into which we are born, and the house in which we grow up." This quote from "The Silent Patient," connects to Mary growing up in "baby jail" and the home where criminals and stuff grow up in. If it wasn't for that, then she wouldn't be the same as right now. Instead she would still be innocent with an easier life probably growing up with a better family.

I think this excerpt relates more to Momma than Mary when it comes to an unknown past. Mary's actions we know for sure are because of her past with Ray, her mom, and her dead, unknown father. For Momma, however, we have no idea why she chocked and swung Alyssa by her feet (if Mary is telling the truth) other than her having some sort of mental illness. "...it is impossible for someone who was not abused to become an abuser." Momma as a child was probably abused which led to the abuse and death of Alyssa, and the lack of mother figure in Mary's life. This could potentially lead Mary to become and abusive mother to Bean if she is allowed to keep Bean.

"Sometimes it's hard to grasp why the answers to the present lie in the past" from The Silent Patient connects to the part in Allegedly where Mary was saying "Mama its time to tell them the truth, tell them what happened to Alyssa." This connects because if Mary's Mother tells them what happened in the past, the answer to the present, it could help mary get out of the situation she is in right now

In "Silent Patient" where the author talks about a baby harboring the behavior they receive from the parent connects with Mary because in Allegedly Mary gets this split personaltity from her mother where as Mary's mother can go from being nice to a different person. For example when mary through the boiling water on the girl she was somewhat calm before she went in her from and after she was livid and throw the water on the other girl which Mary learned from her mother.

Just like this story said, Mary is a "blank slate" which harbored her personality and who she is from her surroundings. To claim that Mary is responsible for Alyssa's death, especially after knowing Mary's side of the story, would be ignorant of her childhood and the people that surround her. Its almost like you're denying her bad experiences and horrible childhood. Its crazy to me how they barely questioned her mother and quickly jumped to the conclusion that Mary is guilty.

The excerpt from a silent patient relates to Mary’s situation because of when it says “a baby cannot hate the mother without the mother first hating the baby”. It relates to Mary because how Mary showed her growing hatred towards her mother. But by her mother’s actions, she had to hat Mary first, also with Alyssa, she used to swing her by her feet. It also says an abuser doesn’t become a abuser without formerly being abused. This would just have triggered a chain of events since we can assume Mary was also abused. Even if she wasn’t physically, the hatred coming from her mother is enough to do psychological damage with can be emotional abuse. Taking this, Mary could turn out the same way and treat bean with the same hatred and abuse.
