In 121 A.D., Emperor Hadrian built a wall in northern England to defend the province from the Celts, called Hadrian’s Wall. The Celtic tribes in Britannia adapted to Roman civilization and became Christian in the 4th century. Roman influence is still evident in the names of some towns, the road system, and the foundations of major cities like London. Celtic chiefs adopted the Roman way of life, and cities were reorganized in Roman style. From here on, Britain suffered invasions by Germanic tribes and the Roman legions withdrew.
