Ch 9:  Jim is in his bedroom when his mom comes in and they have a conversation about how Jim will never do anything in his life that might hurt him, like having children. His mom tells him that life will hurt you but don't let that stop him from doing things.
Ch 10: The salesman is walking and crosses paths with "The most beautiful woman in the world" as she is dead and surrounded by ice. He tries to imagine her height and eye color and wonders what will happen if someone melted the ice. When they are dropped off at random houses, Will and Jim argue about apologizing to Mr. Cooger and about how Jim was mad that Will destroyed the machine but Will was glad he did. Miss Foley asks the boys if they are innocent and Jim runs away.
Chapter 27: Mr. Halloway walks the boys home and Jim promises to tell his mom in the morning of there run in with the law. Mr. Halloway knows his son is innocent but wonders why he pleaded guilty. Will starts to tell his father everything, he stops, and promises to tell him in a couple of days. 
Chapter 28: Will and his dad talk for a while about happiness and what is really was. His dad is sad and he knows that Will is wiser than him. Will climbs up to his room while his dad followed. They shared a father/son moment and they go to bed.
Chapter 29: Will and Jim sense something outside and peer outside at the same time. The see a balloon with a wax, but very much real witch marks Jim's lightning rod-less house. The boys wash off the mark and hope that their enemies at the carnival won't be able to find them easily.
30: Jim knows the witch senses excitement. He come up with a plan which leads him and the witch to an abandoned house. Jim is on the roof and ends up grabbing the basket of the deflating air balloon. Chapter 32: Jim has a dream identical to the adventure Will had and he was going to tell Jim when they saw a little girl crying. When they couldn't find Miss. Foley, the boys were certain the little girl was her. The boys boys hide from the Carnival Parade and when they look, the girl is gone.
Chapter 33: Will calls his Dad and tells him that he and Jim might not be home tonight. Mr. Halloway is obligated to tell Mrs. Halloway and Jim's Mom. In and effort to not drag him into the situation, Will says nothing but asks his dad to wish him luck. Then Mr. Halloway walks out.
Chapter 34: Will and Jim hide underneath an iron grille in front of a shop. The Parade stops and dark tells his "freaks" to search for the boys. A little kid drops his gum on the grill and call for his mother as he found the boys.
Chapter 35: Mr. Halloway happens to be at the same shop as the commotion. He sees the boys and they warn him to keep their hiding place secret. Dark knows the boys' names and when Mr. Halloway is asked about them, he lies. The Illustrated Man has tattoos on his palms of the boys and when squeezed, the boys feel pain. Dark says he will pay a visit to Mr. Halloway as Mr. Halloway signals to the boys to meet him at the Library at 7:00.
Chapter 36:  The Dwarf realizes that Mr. Halloway saw the boys in the grille and communicated with them. He hasn't told his wife or Jim's mom about the whole situation. He senses something bad will happen as he prepares to face it.
Chapter 38: They are afraid of even going to the library now. They band on the door and Mr. Halloway opens it. The boys then tell Will's dad the whole story. Charles Halloway share his research with the boys that the same people have been running this evil carnival for many years. Mr. Halloway tells the boys that he is there to help.
Chapter 39:  Mr. Halloway explains how the carnival works. It feeds of of hate and fear. He said that the only way to defeat it was to challenge it with the power of love. The carnival might be around for a long time thriving on the suffering and pain of others.
Chapter 40: It is explained by Mr. Halloway that the carnival doesn't steal souls but they are given souls as they create the fear of death and when people are faced with death, they do anything to avoid it, hence the carousel. The carousel changes the body but not the mind and that will drive the victim crazy. When the door opens, Mr. Halloway tells the boys to hide. 
Chapter 41: Dark and the Illustrated Man come into the library and asks Mr. Halloway where the boys are. He threatens Charles Halloway by saying that the Witch can make his heart stop so it seems like a natural death. He then offers Mr. Halloway a ride on the carousel. Dark walks up and down the halls looking for the boys while Mr. Halloway's heart throbs.
Chapter 42: Dark continues to look for the boys. He says he will give Jim a ride on the carousel and says that he took Will's mother on the carousel and she became a hideous old women who shrieked the most horrible sounds. This caused Will to whimper. The Illustrated Man follows the sound of Will's sobs and finds the hiding place of the boys.
Chapter 43: Dark seizes Will and Jim. Mr. Halloway tries to stop him but gets his hand crushed by the Illustrated man. Outside the window, Will and Jim's mothers' are coming back from church; Dark explains that life is full of coincidences. A spell is cast on the boys so that they are not able to see, hear or speak. Dark then orders the witch to go and stop Mr. Halloway's heart.
Chapter 44: Mr. Halloway is still on the floor in excruciating pain when the witch comes to end him. He begs her to make it quick. He follows her direction in slowing his heart rate. When he decides to look at the world he is about to leave, what he sees makes him laugh uncontrollably. His laughter physically pains the witch.
