In the day leading up to the battle of Appomattox Courthouse (April 9, 1865), Confederate leader Robert E. Lee headed west along the Appomattox River, leading to Appomattox County. He reached the county on April 8, 1865.

He was aiming to get to the Appomattox Station where he would be resupplied with food for his soldiers. Unfortunately, this did not happen and another war general by the name of George A. Custer intercepted him. Custer and his army burned down three of Lee’s supply trains. Lee, however, did not give up.

He refused Grant’s wishes and moved on to Lynchburg. The next day brought trouble for Ulysses S. Grant when General John B. Gordon and his corps attacked Grant’s cavalry not far from the country courthouse. When Gordon realized that the cavalry was supported by two Union corps, he stopped in his tracks. Lee’s army was trapped. Messages were sent and exchanged between Lee and Grant.

They both agreed to meet at the Wilmer McLean home in Appomattox Courthouse on that same day. It was here that the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia was signed. Three days afterward, a ceremony marked the dismemberment of Lee’s army and his parole board. This ultimately ended the war in Virginia. This event triggered similar events across the south ultimately ending the Civil War.
