In both literary works, identity and alienation are key ideas explored. Students will be tasked with understanding the protagonists' cultural background and how it affects their identity and perspective in the regions or countries they have moved into and how differently they communicate their discomfort. These would be further explored through non-literary texts such as cartoons and articles, which build on the issue of alienation that migrants face.

This will be done through inquiry, conceptual understanding, local & global contexts & assessments (formative and summative)

Through thinking skills, students would be looking at how migrants are perceived in both works and texts. They would be expected to critique local reception towards migrants at the global level as well. And notice if students notice any parallels between the literary works and the non-literary texts. This allows them to be more perceptive towards the cultural backgrounds and notice that it doesn't exist in a vacuum.

By exposing students to a variety of views revolving around migration, students would be able to pick out biases and question their own beliefs' validity. Some of these sources could include The Guardian, Breitbart, or The Onion (useful for satire)

This would also allow them to pay close attention to the rhetoric used to perceive migrants and the impact it has on the protagonists & audience. (How does language represent social distinction and identities?)

Plus, they would be more sensitive to the needs of migrants and their struggles in surviving in a new country. This could come in useful as they look into relating to global issues for their IA and question if such xenophobic sentiments persist or are subverted, or even practice for their Paper 1
