When the Americans declared war on the Germans there began a wide spread prejudice against the German Americans. These acts of negativism were not limited to new immigrants from Germany, someone who has a German ancestor as early as before the revolutionary war could face this discrimination. In the most extreme cases, German breeds of dogs were killed in large quantities, and the President instated a decree that stated that any German must register as an enemy alien. These people were forced to be photographed and interrogated about their loyalty to the United States of America.

A series of bomb attempts were made against prominent capitalist and others who had targeted radicals, including US attorney Mitchel Palmer. He wanted to be able to get rid of the largest amount of radicalism from the country as possible. Hoover was very concerned and convinced that communism was the largest threat that existed. Many were arrested for being part of Russian labor unions. Most of the people arrested were never even part of any kind of criminal or terrorist organizations.

On December 16th, there was a bombing. A postal worker found 5 fliers stuffed into the mail box and found a letter that read “Remember we will not tolerate any longer the freedom of the political prisoner or it will be sure death for all of you American anarchist fighters“ shortly after this there was an enormous blast. Building walls and streets were stained violently with the color red. There were window weights found throughout the city that were ejected from the blast. Most that were dead were under the age of 30. Trading resumed the next morning and one hundred thousand people came to see the damage and came together to sing the national anthem.

After the bombings, two anarchists were arrested for the robbing and murder of men a week before the bombing. Vanzetti was disappointed at the reality of the United States. He worked back breaking labor and was basically rewarded with nothing. Sacco and Vanzetti were escorted into court with many police officers and were sat in a cage. This was very effective in making the jury afraid of these men and they were sentenced to death. This was very upsetting to the public and they became celebrities symbolizing racial prejudice and standing for equality. They were put to death and Hundreds of thousands of people watched as their bodies were paraded throughout the town.

Congress passed the espionage act which made it illegal for anyone to communicate any information that might be useful for the enemy. This further suppressed anti-war thoughts. Then this was repealed and replaced with a more intense act called the sedition act which allowed for people to be put in jail for up to 20 years just for saying something negative about the war. No one was safe from these laws. This allowed for no one to be able to be against the war and therefor the government could do whatever they wanted without uproar. People felt watched and it was very restricting.
