Sachin is a student who requires a lot of support both emotionally and academically. Because of his extended absences he misses opportunities for pre teaching of concepts and needs one on one time to work with his teacher. Linguistically, he is confront daily with many words and letters that he does not understand. Using sentence frames and the scaffolding of language instruction will support him moving forward.

More collaboration between the ESL teacher and homeroom would make for smoother transitions and greater opportunities for support for Sachin. Having similar visuals (sentence templates and current terms) would prove to be a big support for Sachin.

Sachin is blessed to be in a classroom where the homeroom teacher has a wide range of books and selects books for him frequently that reflect his reading level, comprehension, and interest. The school librarian is very involved and knows may of the students requiring more support very well. There are many opportunities for him to interact with the librarian and the resources in the library commons. The homeroom teacher and teacher librarian work closely together to chose books that are reflective of current themes as well as student needs.

Notions of literacy have changed. Sachin's teacher and I have discussed different ways in which we can infuse technology into his day to day programming. He is interested in tech and we need to harness that interest and engage him using different apps, websites, and resources to maximize his attention and desire to learn. We are looking at using Raz-kids, and using more kinesthetic activities during removal like 'Catch the Fruit -Toss a piece of plastic fruit to a student and ask, "What is it?" Elicit and prompt the correct vocabulary. Gesture the student to throw it back to you and repeat with different fruit and students (in L1 if needed and using images to support)

During the month of November an assembly was held and Mr. W was approached and asked if he could think of any of his students that would be able to share something from their culture that they connect with or enjoy. Mr. W and I discussed having Sachin and several other of his class members participate and made a plan to meet with them individually to assess their interest and what they connected with the most about their culture so we could make a plan for them to be involved. We are hoping their interests will be encouraging and that they will be excited to participate. We have connected with grade 3 ambassadors to see if some of the older students could act as partners/leaders and encourage and assist them with the task.
