The history between India and Pakistan, both nuclear powers, is linked together. The countries have fought two wars since 1947. In 1947, India gained independence, and it was divided into Pakistan which was mainly Muslim, and India which is mostly Hindu. The two Indo-Pakistani wars were fought from 1947-1948 and then again in 1965.

End of British Rule

Following the end of British rule, British India was partitioned into India and Pakistan. The countries were divided based on Hindu and Muslim majorities, which caused mass migration for those that did not live in the majorities. Since the partition, India and Pakistan have been fighting over land resulting in over 100,000 deaths in the 74 years since their independence.

Possible Solutions

While there are many possible solutions to this conflict, there are two that I find the most plausible. The first being a civil discussion between the two countries to reach a solution. This could be moderated by a third party such as the UN to coax a resolution to the long ongoing conflict between Pakistan and India. A second solution to this could be for the US or another well-developed country to provide India and Pakistan with incentives to end conflict. Whether that incentive be money or trade opportunity, this would be very influential and could ensure no further conflict at the risk of sanction.

Each Countries Claim to Kashmir

When India gained its independence from Britain in 1947 and was split into Pakistan and India, Kashmir decided to remain independent. But, Pakistani Militants attacked Kashmir, and it sought help from India becoming an autonomous territory of India. So, India points back to this treaty as to why Kashmir should be a part of the country. In contrast, Pakistan believes that because Kashmir has a Muslim majority, that it is rightfully Pakistan's.
