Approximately four milion people, including indigenous people (Inuit) live in the Arctic. Inuit are experts at surviving in the harsh environment of the Arctic. Their clothes were made from animal fur and sealskin, keeping them warm in the subzero temperatures. Their diet used consists of meats such as walrus, whale, seal and reindeer. Their shelters used to be made from blocks of snow called iglos. They also built houses from logs or stone covered with earth. Their way of life changed when they started meeting new people and some of the Inuit left the Arctic to work in cities and towns in the 1800s and 1900s. Those who stayed in the Arctic began to use foreign goods such as snowmobiles, motorboats and guns.

Yusha B

Ice is present year-round in the Arctic, expanding during the winter and retreating during the summer. Sea ice is a special feature of the Arctic, and most wildlife there depend on it in some way. Polar bears use the ice as platforms when feeding on seals. Walruses use the ice as a place to rest. There's even algae that live in the ice.

FARIS

Did you know that approximately 10% of the world's fresh water is contained within the ice of the Arctic? This giant, white, frozen sheet of ice reflects the sunlight, therefore keeping the region cool and the global climate stable. However, the Arctic ice is melting at an alarming rate of -9% per decade, increasing the global temperature further and reducing the habitat of polar animals such as polar bears. Polar animals need the ice to live on, raise their young, hunt and to be able to rest on after long periods of swimming. The melting ice also increases sea levels, leading to an increase in floods.

Yusha B
