The Rhetorics of Insurance Advertisements

In project two, I wrote about how insurance companies utilize rhetoric to help sell a service to potential consumers. My padlet is going to further examine various insurance companies and how they go about utilizing rhetoric to make the advertisement more personable in order to attract an audience. The main advertisement addressed within project two was a skit from SNL (Saturday Night Live) taking a satirical approach on Statefarm’s Jake from Statefarm advertisements. They use this approach to create familiarity to endorse a service.

“Jake From Statefarm” - SNL

Saturday Night Live created a parody of the original Jake From Statefarm concept that garnered a large amount of attention. This was effective advertisement for statefarm because its used familiar celebrities in a comedic way in order to enhance the original message of the advertisements. The original advertisement could be quite comedic at times but this skit took the ads to the extreme. They allowed people to look from a different angle possibly much darker as implied in the skit. Still communicated effectively through comedy. It had people thinking, Is Jake truly such a “Good Neighbor”? Due to his heavy involvement in the families life.

https://youtu.be/bTNiweGySc4?si=fm9MiGx0wU17BWFb

The original advertisements from although still very comedic took a minimalistic approach to there commentary. The original concept depicted a man on the phone whispering at 3 A.M. He was then discovered by his wife who had then made an assumption he was talking with another woman. She takes the phone from her husband and question the man on the other side of the line stating, “What are you wearing, ‘Jake’?” Which Jake then replies, “Uhhh… Khakis.” This single quote kickstarted the new approach for statefarm to engage in rhetoric and appeal to audiences in a new way. Although there have been a few Jake’s none will ever be as iconic as the original.

https://youtu.be/FeRXvthn394?si=DoB3ZwGtgyLO1_HT
