The Great Schism was an extremely significant event for the Church for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was a major contributing factor to the final split of the church meaning it was no longer united. When the church first split into the East and West groups those that spoke Latin based languages such as Italian, French and Spanish and those who didn't separated from each other. This had a large impact on the church as it redefined everything that they traditionally knew. These changes included things such as the Filoquay Clause whereas the West believed the parts of the Holy Trinity were different, however the East believed that they were all equal in power. This and many other reasons had a major impact on the Split and the development of the Church.

The schism was significant as it was the event the participated in the final separation of the church, led by the patriarch of Constantinople, Michael Celuraius.
The fall of literacy in the western areas led to the clergy as the fundamental teaching. However, in the East there were more universities which created literature to become more popular. Creating more theologians who played major roles in the Catholic Church.

The great schism of 1054 also known as the east/ west schism involved a great significance to the church community today. The significance of the event is that it split according to the different views of cultures. The now Eastern Orthodox, who took on the Greek culture and Catholic churches, who took on the Roman culture, know as the east and west. They disagreed on a range of theological and sacramental issues, some of these include the use of unleavened bread for the Eucharist, celibacy for clergy, beards for clergy, baptism/rebaptism, fasting and Moses Ten Commandments. Disagreeing on these views was a huge significance as Catholic, meaning union, the church believed everyone should be united and as a whole before the split. So the schism was a extremely big significance as it went against the Catholics views. To this day the east and the west are still spilt proving how significant the great schism of 1054 really was to the church
