By the third version (bottom) I felt like I was getting somewhere... I don't usually use a spiral bound sketchbook and in this exercise in particular I felt the visual and mental barrier to creating a cohesive spread. I think my brain is stretching - this is really fun!

One of the things I realized was that since my first drawing was light, it was harder to keep it the darkest and more of a focus. When I added the "6" it was much darker so I went over it with a white pastel.

I had so much fun doing this assignment!

It's funny because Lewis said " you could draw Tabasco sauce bottle "... or something like that and I had this tiny little Tabasco bottle on the shelf for years. So I took his advice and I'm playing with that as one of the three images in the first lesson suggestions. (@susanloughrin)

Hi Lewis - The eraser you use for charcoal - what kind is it? Is it black from repeated use on charcoal? If you use it to erase charcoal, is it “contaminated” and you shouldn’t use it on pencil? Thank you!

I know I am waay off the assigned path here but I really struggled with even starting the lessons until I could figure out how to make it my own. I tend to get frozen with imposter syndrome if I try to follow examples too closely. So I chose to work in a black mixed media journal and with a guiding theme - The Twilight Zone - so I had a direction to go that really fit into my usual interests & enthusiasms. I hope that's okay. It was a fun challenge to reverse the shading techniques from adding all the shadows to adding the highlights. I love working on colored grounds, retro sci fi, and adding a touch of humor so this ticks all the happy-making boxes for me even if it wanders wide from the assignment. Thank you for the wonderful inspiration Lewis!

I did this more or less from imagination and from the one Lewis was sketching while listening to the lesson (on one of the smeared pages from lesson 1). Then because it was completely unbalanced to the left I looked into my collage papers and found that other guy that even looks similar but it wasn't intended at all. That's why I scribbled "he is not the same".
I am loving this class so much!

After I drew this head, I was considering adding an upper body to ground it, but then I thought about how it looked kind of like a mylar balloon, so instead I added a balloon string coming out of the chin and the word "floating." :-) I used black ink for the initial drawing, Pilot razor pen that I water-brushed out for the grey/blue shadows, some graphite for additional shadows, and colored pencil for the glasses frames. I don't usually draw people, and I was really happy about how much I enjoyed doing this drawing.

This time I attempted a caricature in my Twilight Zone themed sketchbook; somehow managed a unique expression even though I was working off a specific reference; blind luck the clock transparency fit in his glasses; it fell out onto the page as I was sorting ephemera so went with it...black paper but laid down some messy brush swipes in light grey acrylic the day before. Watched the episode while doing this so the bombed out background came as I was working...

Homework lesson 2.1- a little behind. I was training on a farm in rural South Africa. There are beautiful wild flowers all around, what saddens me is the litter. So my 3 pieces are around the flower Cosmos & it’s littered environment. I feel I copied Lewis too much - I don’t normally write so this felt a little weird, but that was the reason for taking this course - try new things... & try to be restrained - eek so hard

Trying to hold back is sooo hard! But I am learning - I keep wanting to add loads of colour. I added my wet wipe to the bottom coz I had inked it all black & was too dominant & then found a heart pic & added it to the piece - the colour doesn’t match the white.

How can a sketch of a vertebra take me on a journey to the south pole !? So much fun!

I realize it is too busy and not great, but I also notice that (1) I had fun once I began (2) stopped too late (3) enjoyed the association of the seashell with the toy top. There are elements that can be useful later on. As you say, it is only a sketchbook. Practice:-)

Slime molds for Lesson 4. We're still not sure how to scientifically classify them--are they plant, animal, a bit of both? They spore and grow like a fungus and can communicate and travel. A fabulous mystery.

Lewis - thanks for the tip to search about on Pinterest for sketching ideas. While doing this sketch, I understood I need to work toward heavier / thicker lines. I learned to remember to use a lighter drawing in composition. Also - I’m understanding a sketch isn’t a final drawing - it is an experiment. A time to wonder, “What happens if I do this.....”

Thanks for your class, Lewis. It motivated me to start drawing again after several years. I love watching you draw in that loose style! I learned that I enjoy drawing faces, but I am impatient with drawing most everything else! But I will try not to quit this time... plan to fill my sketchbook!

I was not going to post mine because i am not very proud of it as a whole. Yet there are a few elements I had a lot of fun playing with and that’s a start for another grid. Maybe grid 50 or 178 will be looser and more together . Hope eternal ☺️ Either way, this is great fun! I have enjoyed every lesson in your class, Lewis, learned a lot, loved watching you draw effortlessly and put things together so creatively. You are a very inspiring teacher. I struggled with this assignment - but I also loved it. I did 2 to try & get better balance of contrast (didn’t succeed). I also loved this assignment and both pieces are intensely personal & it it was an opportunity to visualise a story. I will definitely do it again & again. Thank you Lewis - loved your course.

Enjoyed the grid much more than I expected. Love moving about the page and am looking forward to exploring my “new shape alphabet.” The sketchbooks you recommended have been wonderful references for me. On this one, I began with the stamp of the bird just to get something on the page. However, it was too dark so I came up with the idea to glue a piece of tracing paper over it - which worked well. Also used the copy machine to make images larger or smaller to fit into a space. Very random pieces parts.

While taking notes from our class, I started to sketch along with Lewis for additional practice. After class I added the grid. The face along the top row I wasn’t happy with, so I added a face mask torn from a brown paper bag. Another face I wanted to remember Lewis’ glueing another face over, so used a postage stamp that I enlarged with the copy machine to get a better. Also LOVE Lewis’ bugs.... Thank you again for the class. I hope you will do more.
