Sauna

To me sauna holds a special place in my heart. It is almost the culmination of the Finnish culture itself. I think many words such as 'sisu' etc. are characterized in the activity of taking a bath in sauna. Since I have been familiar with it my whole life, I don't think of it as a weird thing - although I understand if foreigners do. Sauna is the place to be in the times of relaxation and 'mind purifying'. Although I rarely have the luxury of going to sauna these days since I live in an apartment house, I take the opportunity to enjoy sauna anytime possible.

If there's one place I couldn't picture existing without a sauna, it would have to be a summer cottage. To me a summer cottage without sauna is like Xmas without presents. Sauna is more than just a hot room to enjoy. It is a place where Finns have always bathed, had conversations about everyday life and even given birth in. Sauna is a true Finnish tradition that lives everyday.

Santeri Kinnunen

The Finnish Past

As a Finn I know a lot of other things that weren't provided in the links. Referring to the refugee situation, also a lot of Finns fled from the war in 1944's. The refugees were mainly from the Lapland area.

The most surprising thing I read from the references was about the Finnish Expatriate Parliament. I have always thought it's only the Finnish embassy that works abroad and deals with relations considering Finns and Finland in other countries. I found it odd that I hadn't heard of it since I study Hospitality Management and thought we had covered all the foreign policies in Finnish travel agencies etc.

I think I have a quite clear picture on what the Finnish population statistics look like. We have a lot of people reaching retirement age. We call this group of people as freely translated ''large age-groups''. They are the people who were born after the war and in time which it was more common to have a lot of family members under the same roof. Nowadays birthrate is going down in Finland and the population is growing smaller.

Santeri

Economic Future of Finland

Finland is known for it's technological innovations. There are many organisations which offer products worldwide. For example Rovio releases mobile apps and games, while Nokia was the most successful Finnish corporation to this day. Finland gains more assets from export than import. The other part of the story is all the wood related products such as paper machines and paper itself are a strong business in Finland. This is easily explained by the vast forests surrounding Finns everywhere in the country. The future looks very bright from the economic point of view in Finland. Finland has seen nothing but growth in its economics since the 1990's recess. The future of exporting goods is dependent of the improvements made in the hi-tech end of computing and engineering.

Santeri

Education in Finland

I started my path in studies at the age of 7. I started elementary school and after I had completed that, I naturally started going to junior high school. The mandatory schooling system in Finland takes about 9 years to complete. I felt like it was kind of an easy job to go through the mandatory school and it created a strong basis for higher education.

I started high school after junior high, since I didn't really know what to study in a vocational school. I was attending to high school in Jyväskylä, Central Finland which is also my hometown. I graduated on time, which is 3 years. To this point I still hadn't figured out my 'dream job' so the next step was a total mystery for me.

After high school it was time for me, as it is for every male from ages 18-28 to attend a mandatory military service or alternative civil-service. I chose the military since there was a possibility to complete it in shorter time. I attended there for 6 months and while completing my service, I was accepted to study as Bachelor of Hospitality Management in Savonlinna, Finland.

I moved to Savonlinna in February, 2013. It was exciting since it was the first time I moved on my own. Our school relocated to St. Michel after a year or so, although I currently live in Jyväskylä again. Im supposed to graduate in the spring 2018.

Santeri

The everyman's rights in Finland are regulations which allow individuals to explore nature and countryside quite freely. In Finland the same rights apply to all nationalities. For example harvesting berries is one of the most popular EMRs in Finland. Although everyone is allowed to roam in the nature freely, there are some restrictions when it comes to EMRs. Here are the allowed and not-allowed activities considering the EMRs:

You may

walk, ski or cycle freely, except very near people's homes, or in fields and plantations which could easily be damaged.

camp out temporarily, a reasonable distance from homes

pick wild berries, mushrooms and flowers, as long as they are not protected species

fish with a rod and line

use boats, swim or bathe in inland waters and the sea

walk, ski, or drive a motor vehicle or fish on frozen lakes, rivers and the sea.

You may not

disturb people or damage property

disturb reindeer, game, breeding birds, their nests or young

let pets off leash

cut down or damage trees

collect moss, lichen or fallen trees from other people's property

light open campfireswithout permission, except in an emergency

disturb people's privacy by camping too near them or making too much noise

leave litter

drive motor vehicles off road without the landowner's permission

hunt without the relevant permits

fish with nets, traps, or a reel and lure without the relevant permits

Santeri
