A temporary roof is erected. October 2002: Local planners report that the Millennium Link Project at the Glasgow Canal Strategy both provide a positive framework for regeneration along the Forth and Clyde Canal. September 2007: External inspection shows the building to be well secured. The exterior has a reasonably fresh coat of paint, although there is fresh graffiti. There are two large cracks on the front wall. The render on the north chimney is a mosiac of cracks.
September 2010: External inspection finds that since our previous visit the render to the front elevation has deteriorated and come off in patches. The level of graffiti has increased.
10 December 2013: Scottish Canals advise they would welcome discussion with any potential user of the building to help to safeguard this important piece of heritage for future generations. Please note that the building is not suitable for residential purposes given the proximity of overhead pylons.
9 June 2014: External inspection finds further loss of render evident, but otherwise the building remains in much the same conditon as seen previously.
8 March 2016: Local planners note the Growing Places and Spaces (Woodside, Hamilton Hill, Speirs Locks) project has been awarded £1,330,000 from the Regeneration Capital Grant Fund 2016-17. The project aims to deliver a number of capital improvements which includes the restoration and refurbishment of the former canal keepers' house.
8 March 2017: Local planners note Full Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent for initial repairs and alterations (to enable temporary re-use of the site whilst longer-term use is development) has been conditionally approved (16/03149/DC & 16/03133/DC)
