World War 1: Europe was already in conflict before the war even started but after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand it all went downhill. Alliances formed for both sides which caused one great war among Europe.
World War 2: On September 1st, 1939 Hitler's army crushed Poland's defenses and took control of the country. This caused France and Great Britain to declare war on any. Which then evolved into a second world war.
Pearl Harbor: In attempts to stop Japanese expansion in the Pacific, the U.S decided to cut off shipment of oil to Japan. This angered Japan. They decided to plan a secret attack on the U.S. On December 7, 1941 Japanese bomber planes flew above Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Many Americans perished. The U.S had no choice but to declare war on Japan thus entering World War 2.

Consequences of the Wars: Total War on Homefront

Total War is when nations involved in a war devote nearly all their resources to the war effort. This was the case in both World War I and World War II. Total War could be seen as both a devastating thing to the people who were effected, as well as good.
Rationing, for example, was a method used for divided up resources needed for soldiers and weapons, and the people at the home front. Generally food was the most limited resource, it being the first thing people think of when they hear "rationing". However, other things were also limited, like how fast you could drive to save gas, how much laundry soap you could buy, and even specific kinds of clothing were limited for purchase. These sorts of things were likely to start riots and such, so nations used propaganda to lift their people's spirits, as well as have them help pay for the war in donations (In some places, children collected scrap metal, families "bought" tanks, and in places like the US people bought war bonds). Radio reports of the war were played, though with much censorship.
The fact that most men, especially in places like the US and such, were drafted into the wars meant that women filled in most of their jobs in places such as factories, offices and shops. They built many of the tanks, guns and so on needed for the war, as well as running places like hospitals (most women who had seen the war firsthand were nurses). This led to the changing of the commonly accepted opinion that women were unable to do the same things men were able to do. After the war, many women protested for Women's suffrage (which most nations accepted into law), talks about birth control, and girls cutting their hair shorter into bobs, drinking, smoking and driving.
Unfortunately, equality did not reach all people during this time, some even had what little freedom they had stripped away. The US, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, made anti-Japanese propaganda posters and the like. The results their actions led to the discrimination of Japanese-Americans, many of who were American born with Japanese parents. Eventually the US rounded up many Japanese-Americans into camps, a disturbing parallel to Nazi roundup of Jewish people and others in Germany and other Axis controlled territories. Surprisingly, their were Japanese-Americans who willingly served in the army, despite the conditions of their families at home due to the government which they served.

The Causes of World War I

One of the causes of the war was because of nationalism . Nationalism is when a country defines themselves as a nation. This contributed to the war because of the nations competing with one another trying to be the strongest among all of them. Another cause is imperialism which is when a nation takes over other countries and tries to influence them to be like them. This was happening in Europe when they were trying to colonize all of Africa and Central Asia. This was a problem because of mistrust between Europe. This lead to militarism which is when a nation has their army ready at any moment. All of this lead to some countries having alliances which is when they unite their military powers and work together. one of the many benefits is that they tries to become peaceful with each other. One of the downsides however, is that they can get get all messed up which could lead to a huge war in Europe.
World War II- Some of the main causes of this war was because of militarism in Japan. There was a great depression going on and wanted to restore traditional ways of ruling. Once they got the military power ready, they invaded a city in China which was the first direct challenge to the league of nations. The league of nations were the 3 countries that posed the greatest threat to peace. 4 years later, they invaded Northern China. This incident encouraged European fascist to start some aggression of their own. Italy then went on to go and conquer Ethiopia and colonize it. Hitler also defied the treaty of Versailles which limit his army and where it could go. France and Britain let that go in order to keep peace which did not result in the end.

Consequences of the Wars: Treaties and "Peace" Ideas

WWI: As the First World War came to an end, the Allied Powers, consisting of the French, the British, the Italians, and the Americans, met in the palace of Versailles to discuss the peace proposals. The leaders of the Allies, the Big 4, with Woodrow Wilson of the US, Georges Clemenceau from France, David L. George haling from the UK, and Vittorio Orlando of Italy. Wilson planned the 14 Points during the war, and these terms were discussed during the meeting. While Wilson wanted to make the end of the war fair, the British and French wanted to punish the Germans, as they wanted the Caucasian Continent(s) to be safe from German threats. Eventually coming to a compromise in the form of the Versailles Treaty, which punished the German Nation, while also adopting Woodrow Wilson's idea of a "League of Nations", which would try to keep peace among nations(note the word try). While the Germans got punished in the Versailles Treaty, the other Central Powers signed separate treaties with the Allies, splitting up the Austrian-Hungarian Empire into independent nations, and the division of the Ottoman empire into several "mandates"(colonies) that served to prepare nations for independence. The Russians, despite being part of the Allies, lost some land due to leaving the war early, losing Finland, the Baltic states, and other smaller land territories to the Romanians and the Polish. The Versailles Treaty was said to be "peace built on quicksand", and 20 years later, the balance of peace was broken.

WWII: As World War 2 came to an end, the top leaders of the Axis powers had their lives ended by themselves. However, there were still notable Axis leaders alive in time for the Nuremberg Trials, where an organization call the International Military Tribunal charged 22 high ranking Nazis were charged with "Crimes against Humanity". The Nazis were found guilty, hanged, and proceeded to be cremated in their own ovens in the concentration camp at Dachau. In Japan, the Americans took over the demilitarization process, bringing with them the concept of democracy into the Japanese political system, but also keeping the traditions of Japan. The main result of this is a system that is similar to the UK, where the emperor remains, but is only a figurehead, while the real power lies in the the Diet, or Parliament, and the Prime Minister.

Consequences of the Wars: Casualties

World War I: In the spring of 1918, the Spanish flu hit England and India and later spread through Europe, Russia, Asia, and the US. This epidemic had killed civilians and soldiers as well. In India, 12 million people died. In Berlin, 1,500 died in a day. This global epidemic was more destructive than the war, killing 20 million people worldwide. In this war alone, about 8.5 million people died and another 21 million were wounded. Civilians were killed by starvation, disease, and slaughter. It had also brought a devastating economic impact, having a total of $338 billion. Not only that, but it destroyed acres of farmland, homes, villages, and towns. Overall, it brought insecurity and despair to many people.
World War II: By the end of this war, close to 40 million Europeans had died. Bombing and shelling caused hundreds of cities to become rubble and many were left homeless. The battle of Britain left huge areas of London in blackened ruins, the capital of Poland (Warsaw) was almost completely destroyed, and the population of Warsaw dropped from 1.3 million to 153,000 people. After the bombings, many civilians stayed where they were and lived in partially destroyed homes/apartments. They had no water, electricity, and very little food. Others left hoping to find their families or find a safe place to live. Because of this, men joined the military as women worked in war production. A few remained to plant crops, but because transportation was destroyed, famine and disease spread through the cities.
Genocides: In World War I, Armenians were deported from their villages and treated like animals by Ottoman Turks. Armenians, mostly women and children, were massacred. In World War II, the Nazis deported Jews and placed them into concentration camps. At the end of the Holocaust, they had murdered over 6 million Jews. These genocides are similar because the people were murdered for the same reasons. The Turks saw Armenians as an inferior race, which is how the Nazis looked at the Jews. They were both murdered due to their differences from others such as their religion, language, physical appearance, and race.
