Starr is an average 16 year old african american girl living in the ghetto, but going to a predominantly white school. One night during a shooting at a party Starr wanders around and soon finds her best friend, Khalil, to take her home. All of a sudden they're stopped by a cop and Khalil is forced to get out of the car for an inspection. After the inspection Khalil goes to the car to check on Starr, but before he could finish his question he is shot out of nowhere in front of Starr's eyes.
