This happened to them on several occasions during their survival show. They were unsure of themselves in many cases and uncertain if they would be able to debut as a group at all especially when two of the members were eliminated for a time and other members were threatened with elimination more than once (yuki.straykids). So they are able to say this to their audience because they have lived through similar situations, and they can help to pick their audience back up. This idea also ties into the tone of the song which is slightly wistful and almost nostalgic because they are looking back at their past experiences of failure and growing up and relating that to their audience. They end the first stanza with “It’s alright, we just need to go through it and grow.” This can also trace back to them being credible in this type of situation, and it can also connect to the morals and beliefs that the group holds of not quitting and giving up easily. Later on in the song, the lyrics “Feels like you’re running without knowing where the end is, it’s a cycle of having a tired body and tired heart” appear. This use of symbolism once again goes back to the group’s credibility because they are saying that they know what it can feel like to fail. After this lyric, they go on to say, “You’re about to give up, but you’re the one who decides the end.” This connects back to the beliefs that the group holds after going through their own experiences of failure while growing up. They are saying that they have felt what it is like to fail, they have wanted to give up, and others have told them to give up, but they decided for themselves that they would not quit. So now they are using this lyric to emphasize their belief that no one but you can decide when you give up. The group ends the last verse of the song with “Even if it’s hard and tiring, don’t give up. Don’t push yourself away, you just need time.” This also connects with the beliefs that the group holds because they are telling their audience to never give up even if life becomes rough; you just need to work hard and be patient because, even if you fail, you can still succeed.

Some of the first lyrics are “Did you worry a lot? No no no, it’s you’re first time. That’s okay, everyone does that. That’s how it is, even adult made mistakes, practiced and grew when they were our age. There’s still so many firsts for us.” All of this can be seen as logical because it is a relatively well-known fact that falling down, or failing, when you are growing up is very common and happens to almost everyone. However, it is also a relatively well-known fact that there are still many chances to succeed when you are first growing up, and one failure does not mean that life is over. This verse is then ended with the words “We just need to go through it and grow.” This is speaking to the fact that part of growing up is getting through the hard parts and learning and growing from them. The logical appeals of this song are also repeated throughout the lyrics because the chorus, which is repeated thrice, says, “just endure a little more…you gotta take your time, you can do it.” This is saying that enduring hardships is simply a part of the “red tape” of growing, and if you are patient and take your time, you can succeed.

In the second stanza the words “If you fall back a little, just rest. You’re doing fine, when things are hard. I’ll run with you, don’t worry” are trying to strengthen the audience’s endurance and hope by saying that it is okay to take a break when life become difficult, but you cannot give up. The entire chorus also has the intention of giving the audience an emotional message of strength and encouragement for when the audience becomes weary with the repetition of the words “You’re doing fine.” One last emotional appeal that the group uses in the lyrics of this song is the fact that they use pronouns several times throughout the lyrics. Some examples are “I’ll pick you up”, “I’ll run with you”, and “I’ll be next to you.” The group’s usage of the word “I’ll” is conveying to the audience that they will never be alone in this journey of growing up and struggling through life.

Their song “Grow Up” was released as part of their debut album with the subject of the song centering around growing up and persevering even when you fail (yuki.straykids). The speaker of the song is the whole group collectively speaking to two different audiences. The first audience that can be seen within the song is the young fans who are growing up and transitioning from childhood to adulthood as they listen to the song. This first audience is much more prevalent when analyzing the lyrics of the song. When analyzing the visuals of the song’s video however, the audience is portrayed more as the group itself. There are elements within the video that suggest that the members of the group are speaking to each other and trying to reassure one another to persevere even though life may be hard at the moment. This showcases the purpose of the song which is to reassure people who are going through struggles and failures as they are growing up that failure is a part of life, but it does not mean that you should quit and give up because if you are patient and persevere, life will work itself out.

The video for “Grow Up” also showcases several examples of all three appeals in order to connect with not only fans and/or viewers as an audience, but to also connect with Stray Kids themselves as an audience because they are speaking to both themselves and their fans in the video for this song. Overall, the appeals that Stray Kids use in both the lyrics and the video for “Grow Up” are effective in getting the purpose of the song across to their audiences that everyone goes through failures and frustrations while growing up, but if you are patient and continue to put forth your best effort, you will succeed in the end.
