An example of how conservative the Democratic party was in the early 1900's was that they hated the civil rights reforms because they wanted to appeal to voters from the south. It wasn't until the 20th century that the Democratic Party beliefs changed and became more liberal instead of conservative. Before the Civil War, the democrats were greatly involved in Slavery in the south, and still retained control over the south by "opposing "big government" Federal efforts to support black rights and intimidating or excluding black voters". At the time of the great depression, because of the republican's economic downfall this gave the democrats an opportunity to gain overwhelming power. The republicans then established an identity of opposing the "big government" as response to the democrat's growth in power. As the 2000's came around, Hispanic voters have become more prominent in America and thus crippled the republican party's political progress, as they were anti-immigration, which benefitted the democrats a lot as they were pro-immigration. When Trump started running, he appealed to a majority of republicans by using common interests such as anti-immigration and opposition of the "big government", which gained him a large following in the elections, and later gained him presidency.
