Votes were counted in the end to decide on the final 8 builds.
Smaller work teams of 3-4 members were allocated (random draw) a build area. These teams set about building their set task. Each member during the build process would allocate different jobs and check in with team mates as to progress and design. If required teams would vote on most popular elements to be included.
Time frames were set and tasks reallocated with support when required to ensure the whole team worked together to complete the task and build requirements.
After class discussion a final 'polishing crew' was selected to complete a final once over the entire village prepping for final release. Polishing crew members checked in as required to original areas team members if unsure of elements and designs needing any changes.
AdrianG

Our year 2s worked in groups of 4 to complete a research project about the history of school learning tools as well as our schools history. They researched on the internet, in books and throughout the school. The end result was a video created on Explain everything. The groups were mixed abilities and each student took on a role suitable for their own abilities, lead researcher, scribe, photographer, presenter. Though students were individually graded their ability to collaborate had an indirect affect on their mark and final product.

SCIENCE PROJECT

Students work in teams to investigate a road safety concern.
The group is required to choose and investigate a road safety issue they are
interested and discuss the science behind it. A number of experiments are performed to
assist the students in making recommendations to improve road safety.
Throughout the investigation students are constantly evaluating their findings
and performance to improve their outcomes.

The students have to work in teams across the classes and gender and they are assigned a STEM role for the two weeks(with job role badges). Every two weeks we explore concept from the movie about how the chickens tried to escape. eg digging tunnels, building catapults, flying foxes. In the first week we explore how they work and then in the second week the students are given a task/scenario. They are loving having badges and sharing the roles.

It was decided that fluent writers (grade 2) students wrote information on white paper; grade 1s wrote dates on red paper and preps drew/coloured in significant images, e.g. Australia with Indigenous flags and Captain Cook ship to place on timeline. This will continue as students add information to the time-line. Words such as Past Present Future are written on paper and students attach to timeline; birthdays, key event etc...are added
Isabel

Students work in small groups of 4 and have allocated roles. We use these roles in all of our design challenges so the students know them well: chief architect, materials manager, testing coordinator, challenge captain. Students work through the design process as a group and have to colloborate at every stage: imagine, plan, design, test, evaulate. This is a cyclical process and students understand that. At the end of the allocated time the students presented their designs to the class. STEAM challenges are fantastic in developing teamwork and communication skills. Often we take breaks and discuss what is working well/not so well, what an effective team looks/sounds like, do we need to do any reserach?

In groups of 3 students had to research different objects and their characteristics and as a group students were to sort the objects into living, non-living and once-living categories based on the objects characteristics. Once students have sorted their objects, one student would become an expert and the remaining 2 students would then move around to other groups where their expert would explain their objects and their classifications. The 2 students would then ask open-ended questions about the objects to gain further understanding of the objects and relay the information back to their expert. Students would come together to talk about something interesting they learnt from the experts they saw.

4 Students
decided to design. They were not sure what type of game and what format
it would have so they spent a couple of weeks investigating different gaming
platforms and rating these platforms by an agreed upon criteria based on what
they liked in the games they played.

At
the next meeting they compared their results to decide which format they would
all go to to decide what would be their story board. Over four weeks they
played, critiqued and made notes on the things they liked and didn't like as
well as storyboard ideas. Through this it became apparent what areas of
the design process each had strengths in. This helped them decide on who would
do what in the game building.

In my current grade 1 class we find collaborative learning quite difficult. I have a class that experiences difficultly with conflict resolution however it is something we are working on. We have mixed ability groups for most math lessons to encourage development of these skills and do a lot of role modelling. We also conduct science experiments in strategically chosen groups. The difficulty I find is creating independent learners that are motivated to complete the task with minimal input from teachers and maximising conflict resolution skills within these groups.

Students were broken into smaller groups and had a particular section they had to collaboratively write. I compiled student ideas and it was returned to them in print version. We reread our draft and reflected on how it could be improved- adding more descriptive works (noun groups) and showing the audience how our characters felt instead of telling them. The groups then editing their work and made changes by building noun groups and showing not telling. We shared the edited version with the class and students were able to see the clear progression from these reflections.

Removing pressure to 'figure out' relationships and differences is essential to establishing good team spirit and increasing group productivity in the long run.

As part of our design and technology unit recently, I encouraged my students to work collaboratively on a project for what they decided to call "An All-Purpose All-terrain Survival Vehicle" or AAASV. It was an excellent opportunity for students to work together to identify key problems (in a set scenario of 'world disaster'); solutions to the identified problems and then working in self-assigned teams to address each area of design and construction (for example: whole class contributed to overall design and parameters of the vehicle; then broke into smaller task-teams such as flotation, colour, water supply etc.). It was an amazingly engaged and successful unit and the students still talk about it and their 'accidental learning' even now.

They organised themselves into small groups (3 or 4 members) which provided positive interdependence and simultaneous face-to-face interaction among students in teams. Their PBL was to work collaboratively around a STEM related activity, facilitated by USQ students who provided lego kits (motor, batteries included). The task was to work collaboratively through designing and creating (problem solving) a machine capable of load bearing. This involved application of multiple level thinking skills, common team goals, engagement for all, contributing, listening, responding, sharing, encouraging, providing feedback before the evaluative process of measurable student products and performance through tug-of-war between paired team machines. This PBL evidenced win-win participation and a positive schooling experience for all with much laughter and celebrating as teams progressed through to a 'Grand Champion'.

This task involved problem solving techniques, computational thinking, creative and critical thinking skills, project management/ IPBL. The two group members had to decide together the topic and purpose of their movie, organise the materials needed to film, have access to an ipad to take the footage/photos and maintain responsibility and contribution to the task. The teacher had organised the basic materials and Ipad's and content knowledge to the students and checked up on them each day documenting their individual and group progress, asked about any issues they may have experienced. These students were expected to communicate cooperatively with one another in order for the desired project result. In the end result the students overcame their issues and displayed the lifecycle of a caterpillar on lego movie maker to the class with much laughter of some of their creations in the photos presented and the audiences amazement showed the two students how great their project was. This shows effective project collaboration management.
