With the explosion of the internet in the early twenty-first-century we stepped into the “Age of Information”. Almost all of humanity is connected now. Although the media often reports that the use of this new technology increases the risk of isolation and destroys the social life as we knew it before, the internet has a great impact on the society (that isn’t always bad), the economy and also all other parts of the daily life, such as politics.

First of all we’ll have a look at the influence of the internet on the society. The current “Age of Information” is a product of the digital revolution. The so-called “Generation Y” increased the focus on individuality. But individualisation doesn’t mean isolation or egoism. Instead of that social relationships are being reconstructed. Therefore the internet is the most important tool. In the second quarter of 2016 the social platform “Facebook” had 1.7 billion monthly active users. While in the past relationships and communication were offline, nowadays more than 30 billion Whatsapp-messages are sent daily. The connectivity whole over the world and at every time is also the base for globalisation.

Another area which was strongly changed by the Internet is the economy.

Internet is a base technology and it changes the economy completely, such as industry and manufacturing. If you are able to communicate without any costs and in real time, globalisation will be easier. The Internet makes this possible and it is a great chance to improve the economics.

Another point is that more and more automation will be introduced and the way of production changes. In future you will need fewer employees in the factory, but more specialists in the office to control the systems. The automated factory is also known as a part of Industry 4.0.
Furthermore, technology can support your life. For example your fridge could be connected to the internet, which is also known as “Internet of Things”. If you run out of certain items, the fridge will be able to order food automatically.

Furthermore, the internet has a big impact on the political system. In the 20th century people were just able to discuss their political opinions with their friends and others from their hometown. But today the internet enables them to discuss this topic with people from all over the world, so it is much easier for them to find other people with the same opinion. On the one hand this leads to more democracy because the politicians are getting real-time feedback for their decisions through the social internet platforms and the citizens are able to get much more information about the candidates which they might vote for. On the other hand this gives radical groups and terrorist groups more power.

The internet is also very helpful to organise a rebellion. Good examples for that are the rebellions during the Arab Spring in Libya and Egypt beginning in 2010. If they hadn’t had the internet for organization, there would have never been a rebellion.
