The Japanese Professional Baseball League, known as the top level of baseball in Japan, was established in 1936. In 1950, the Japanese Professional Baseball League was reorganized to the Nippon Pro League, due to the fact that Japan didn’t want to only promote Japanese citizens being in the league. The Nippon Pro league is made up of two leagues, the Central League and the Pacific League, and each league contains in itself 6 teams, totaling 12 teams. The rules and league form of the Nippon Pro league, is very similar to those of the MLB.

In his rookie season Nomo won the Rookie of the Year award, and lead the league striking out 287 batters in just 235 innings. After his 1994 season, Nomo got into a contract dispute with his team management and wanted to transfer to the MLB but the Nippon Pro League didn’t want Nomo leaving because their ratings would go down. Nomo figured out a loophole in his contract, and that “retiring” from baseball would allow him to transfer to the MLB, and in 1995, Nomo made his MLB debut for the Dodgers.
