For my focus student he struggles with his dyslexia. Since he has this disability it is hard for him to write out some of his assignments, it also takes him a little bit longer than some of his peers. When he does have to write out an assignment it can be difficult to read because words can be misspelled or the spacing between words are too close. Since my focus student goes to Raskob Day school they have access to a lot of resources to help students. In his class he does have access to a Chromebook that he uses for a decent amount of his assignments. Chromebooks are awesome and very user friendly with a lot of different accessibility features. We were experimenting with it a little bit before the COVID-19 took over the world, so it has been a little bit different since then. One of the things that I want to talk about is the speech to text function on the Chromebooks. This is a really awesome feature because my student has some really great thoughts, but getting them to paper can be difficult. With this feature it can be accessed by either clicking the button on the bottom of the screen or by using the keyboard shortcut search+d. There are a lot of different ways that we can use the speech to text within the Chromebook I only went over the one that we are currently using. I have included a short youtube video below that goes over some of the other functions.

Mateo loves to read graphic novels and hear stories. When a story is read out loud to him, he has strong comprehension skills and can make abstract connections to or between characters and make accurate predictions and inferences. He benefits from help in decoding and, more so encoding multi-syllabic words or single words that contain multiple tricky sounds such as (ough, ph, oa, r-controlled vowels). He has a lot of ideas but will simplify them when written. He can get frustrated easily when he feels he is not doing well and will often say, "I got it" to avoid appearing he needs help. Positive praise and giving him tasks you know he will succeed in to begin and end sessions is probably a good idea, and to remind him he is learning and growing his brain with a "growth mindset."
