I work with ELL students with different abilities and learning preferences, so, as a first step, I’ve started working on a checklist that will help me address the variable learning needs and preferences of the 4 types of learners when planning my lessons. Delivering instruction in a variety of ways and expanding the options of materials and assessments should lead to better engagement and learning among my students.

Our goal is to improve student outcomes within specialized education. As a team we are supporting our scholars in mathematics for the upcoming school year. Our focus will be to support students who struggled with the following content: ( geometry, fractions, percentage, and measurement conversions). We chose the content based upon data from the state examinations, I-Ready, formative and summative examinations. We analyzed and chose the historical data for the last three years. Our goal is to improve the whole child which will improve student performance, esteem and support their social emotional health.

 

We understand the importance of UDL and providing students with individualized options to support their success. As we work with IEP students we know that the correct interventions are based upon trial, data and research which are fundamental to provide students with meaningful interventions that will support their growth.

 

The interventions and strategies we plan on using will incorporate technology and hands-on lessons, activities and games. We plan on utilizing Google Sites to share student work samples with scholars and their families. We will utilize immersive reader and other accessibility features to support auditory learners.  We will utilize various platforms such as Canva, Nearpod, Flaticon, Quizlet and others to support our visual learners.

I can post it digitally, on a chart in my classroom, and I can prepare laminated one-sheet handouts for my students. The symbols of the concepts will provide them with something to hang their understanding on. And if I use them consistently, it will definitely reinforce the learning of ELLs, SWDs, visual learners, etc.

 

I will attach an example of how the symbols can be incorporated into a Retell graphic organizer in the next post.

 

We learned the fundamental importance of UDL and the differences between the traditional and UDL approach to teaching and learning. We learned the UDL approach is not centered towards typical/average student. UDL supports all varieties of learners and provides students with multiple entry points for learning, differentiation, choice and preference.

 

In conclusion, we will monitor, track and analyze data with the focus in mind of students meeting their goals and improving their social emotional and academic outcomes. Lastly, to improve and grow as professionals we will reflect and utilize data to improve and grow professionally.
