Japanese area characters, called ゆるキャラ in Japan, represent a specific Japanese region or city; their names may come from a creative use of words or a relation back to their hometowns. They can be found at area festivals or events. As some area characters were met with intense popularity , other regions followed suit. The annual ゆるキャラグランプリdecides the most popular mascot through public voting.

Japanese area characters can be contrasted to college mascots of the United States. They differ in terms of popularity; ゆるキャラ is renowned throughout Japan as they attend celebrations and events, bringing in millions of dollars from merchandise revenue.
