Star Trek's episode Darmok focuses on Captain Picard being stuck on a planet with a Tamarian named Dathon. The language that Tamarians use to communicate with each other are metaphors based on their own mythology, so the universal translator is unable to form coherent sentences.

Picard starts to realize what Dathon is saying when he repeats phrases in similar situations, such as when they are in danger. For example, "Shaka, when the walls fell" means failure, which Picard inferred from Dathon stating this when he attempted to build a fire, and again when Picard wanted to run after hearing a sound. Understanding the background and reasoning for why the creature is saying these things, help Picard realize the metaphor this species communicates in. Picard is an ardent believer in learning and strives for knowledge, so he desperately makes his best effort to understand Dathon, even telling him a story about Gilgamesh, a story from his own mythology that emulates the situation both him and Dathon are facing at the moment. As Bogost stated in his article, "metaphorical language operates not by signification, but as poetry, by transforming the real in a symbolic mirror."
