Men or women can get gonorrhea when the bacteria enters the body through the mouth, penis, vagina, or by having unprotected sex. In some cases Gonorrhea may not have any symptoms, but others could have all. For men, the symptoms are painful urination, discharged from the tip of the penis, or pain and swelling in one testicle. In women, the symptoms include increased vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding between menstrual cycle , usually after intercourse, and abdominal or pelvic pain. Gonorrhea can also effect other parts of the body like the eyes, rectum, throat, and joints. The eyes could have pain, be sensitive to light, or have discharge coming out. The symptoms of the rectum include straining during bowel movements, having bright red blood spots on toilet paper, discharge, or itching. The symptoms of the throat include, having a sore throat or having swollen lymph nodes in the neck. The joints can also get infected and become  red, warm, swollen, and extremely painful when moving. This is called septic arthritis. When a women is pregnant and has Gonorrhea and is not treated, she could have a miscarriage, premature births, or low birthrates. She could also have chorioamnionitis, this is when the infection is in the placenta or amniotic fluid. If the baby made it through the delivery, there s a chance the baby will develop eye infections. For women the long term effects of having Gonorrhea are having long term pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancies, or infertility. For men the long term effects are infections in the testicles or prostate gland, this could mean lower fertility. If Gonorrhea is left untreated it is known that the bacteria can spread into the blood stream and cause life-threatening infections in both men and women. Gonorrhea can easily be treated with the right antibiotics, doctors usually use intramuscular ceftriaxone.
