There's a culture in South Korea that I admire the most. This is when a deep bow is being performed by children or younger people to their elders to show their respect and wish them good health. This is usually practiced on New Year's Eve—called Saeba. Aside from Saeba, deep bowing is also practiced in South Korea's wedding ceremonies to show respect to your partner, parents, and parents-in-law. I admire this simply because it’s a powerful symbol of respect, conveying a recognition of the other person's worth and dignity. My personal experience with Tiyaga has shown me that true global literacy means appreciating the deep personal sacrifices and resilience of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and others like them worldwide. “In my culture, we value the ancestors’ belief of not easily responding when someone calls our name or not opening the door immediately when someone knocks, especially around 6 p.m., which teaches us to be cautious and careful for our safety.” This practice was taught to every member of our family, both from my mother’s and father’s sides, by my grandmother and uncles because they believe it protects us from possible danger or unseen spirits. They always remind us that being careful and alert can help us avoid harm and be cautious of real-life threats such as theft, crime, or any danger that may come from strangers or even people we know.
